They're going to have to sell this like no other to compete with the UK release plan. A press release has officially announced that Drafthouse Films, the film distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, has acquired North American distribution rights to Ben Wheatley's A Field in England, following up his film Sightseers, out in US theaters tomorrow. We just wrote an article yesterday about how UK distributor Picturehouse Entertainment is planning an unprecedented release pattern for the film hitting VOD, Blu-Ray and theaters all at the same time. Drafthouse says they're planning a "theatrical and VOD release" this year.
Billed as "a psychedelic trip into magic and madness," A Field In England follows a group of English Civil War soldiers in the 17th century who are captured by an alchemist and led into a vast mushroom field, where they fall victim to violent and nightmarish forces. A theatrical and VOD release is planned for 2013. Fans can connect with A Field In England on Facebook and download a free track from the soundtrack by Jim Williams here. CEO Tim League: "Ben represents the ideal filmmaker we love to support at Drafthouse Films and fully embodies our unique brand - a visionary who compounds genre themes and artfully unusual sensibilities. We are incredibly honored to be working with him to release A Field In England."
