Warcraft Movie

Briefly: It's official. Legendary & Universal Pictures have announced a 2015 release date for the upcoming World of Warcraft movie being directed by Duncan Jones (of Moon and Source Code). The movie, titled simply Warcraft, will arrive in theaters on December 18th, 2015 - no other major movies are scheduled for that December yet (however the last two Hobbit movies arrive on that weekend in 2013 and 2014). As we reported previously, casting is now underway (expect more news soon) and shooting begins early 2014. An early PVP sequence was shown at Comic-Con this summer, but specific story details are still unknown. The script is by Charles Leavitt (Blood Diamond, Seventh Son) and Blizzard is intimately involved. Stay tuned.

I hope it divides the time well between Alliance and Horde. I also sort of wish it was just written for screen by the Warcraft writers. I wonder how much contact Leavitt had with them while putting it together.

too bad it didn't come when WOW was at it's peak.

Indeed. They could have raked it in 5+ years ago. Movie vaporware as far as I'm concerned until I actually see show times on a marquee.

Too bad they'll have to move it when Star Wars Episode 7 grabs that date :D

Star Wars' release in May. Always.

It could happen, but just consider this. Disney is releasing The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Star Wars Episode 7. Arguably 2 of the biggest releases of all time let alone of the year. Age of Ultron is already set to open at the beginning of May, opening Star Wars 3 weeks later might not be the most shrewd business decision. They appeal to the same type of people, and Disney wouldn't want either movie stepping on the toes of the other. Disney is going to spend a fortune marketing each, and would like each movie to make $2 Billion if they could. Releasing them in such close proximity will hinder them slightly, and cause their marketing campaigns to overlap. They can't expect to ask everyone in the world to go see The Avengers, and then ask them all to get up and go again to go see Star Wars just a few weeks later. One of them will suffer from it.

Eh, mebbe. I'm sure they have a legion of bean counters on the issue regardless. The late May thing has served the SW series pretty well in the past. I'd probably move Avengers before bucking the SW "tradition". (Not that big a tradition to me, but would likely piss some SW fans off somewhere)

I would agree, except that Age of Ultron is quite a bit further along than Star Wars. Avengers is reported to start shooting at early as late January, while I think the earliest I heard as a start-date for Star Wars was March. But also, the fact that The Avengers has had it's release date set for months....and they still haven't announced one for Episode 7 is more telling. They aren't going to dare to rush that one, they want to 'take the time to do it right' so to speak. The rest of the franchise hinges on them not only not screwing episode 7 up, but making it fantastic.
