Duncan Jones / World of Warcraft

Briefly: It might actually happen! After years of waiting, word on the street (or in the producer's office) is that the World of Warcraft movie will actually start shooting early next year. SlashFilm was speaking with Atlas Entertainment producer Charles Roven (Season of the Witch, The Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel) who told them about Warcraft: "we're moving forward; obviously Legendary is making that film and I'm having a great time with Duncan." That would be director Duncan Jones, of Moon and Source Code, who got the job in January this year. Roven added: "First quarter 2014 we're going to shoot that movie." That puts it on target for a 2015 release, but we'll be keeping an eye on no matter what. This should be cool.

What are the chances this will actually be good?

Duncan Jones has a good record so far.

But's a big studio feature. The likelihood they will give him total creative control is slim to none. And to be fair his last film was only alright. MOON may have been his opus.

i think this will be great. its a huge opportunity too. if you look at the story line from some of their other work i think its even more interesting. Diablo would be awesome. i could easily deliver on 120 mins of badassdery.

I'm worried that it will be Aliiance-centric, instead of balancing. Having a horde story occurring at the same time would be good.
    • I agree. I think a "both sides come together to battle an ultimate evil" would be good.

surely, if you kept up with the mmo recently, you know that the vast majority of the story/thought goes into Horde based progression. Ally is mostly an after thought. This will heavily feature Horde most likely

You're right, I haven't. I played the first bit of Cata, but had to quit shortly after it came out. I will probably pick it up again in a month or two.
        • ColtNoir
right on. It's pretty horde centric. most ally players seem to be upset about it lol, but it's a good story regardless of what faction
  • Duncan has a big task ahead: not only does he need to squash skeptics who think the movie won't be good, but he also needs to help revitalize a game that's slowly losing its players. It's still a popular game, but really needs some new spark.

Yeesh. After 5+ years in dev hell, I have my doubts.

Waste of time for Duncan. I'm still waiting on him to make his Neo-noir thriller Mute, the concept designs for that are awesome! To this date I can't name 1 feature film based on a game that was any good (other than the 1st Mortal Kombat film but I was a kid then it probably sucks now too). He should stick with the personal sci-fi pics and stay away from this which I guarantee will be a big pile!

Shooting was to begin this fall, with Duncan; what's another 6 months of postponing a movie that was first announced in 2006?

    WoW. Too little too late.
