First US Trailer for Peter Webber's 'Emperor' with Tommy Lee Jones

"Let's show them some good old fashioned American swagger." Roadside Attractions has debuted the latest official US trailer for Emperor, an indie historic drama starring Tommy Lee Jones and Matthew Fox as two WWII Generals who travel to Japan just as the war is ending to decide if Emperor Hirohito will be hanged as a war criminal. Along the way, Japanese student Aya (Eriko Hatsune) gets into the mix. This actually looks a lot bigger than an indie, with action scenes and potentially a few war flashbacks, as well as beautiful views of Japan after the war. I may try and see this sooner than later, I got a feeling I may enjoy it.

Watch the latest official US trailer for Peter Webber's Emperor, originally from Yahoo:

In the days immediately following the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II, on the staff of General Douglas MacArthur (Tommy Lee Jones), the de facto ruler of Japan as Supreme Commander of the occupying forces, a leading Japanese expert, General Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox) is charged with reaching a decision of historical importance: should Emperor Hirohito be tried and hanged as a war criminal? Peter Webber (The Girl with the Pearl Earring) directs Emperor with a script from Vera Blasi and David Klass (Kiss the Girls). Roadside Attractions will be releasing Emperor in theaters starting March 8th this spring.

how did you get propaganda from that trailer?
      • Daniel
It doesn't really look like propaganda, but the trailer does seem to show a film that is fairly kind to General MacArthur, whose reputation became increasingly that of a narcissistic power-monger the more his career progressed.

I think it's a unique perspective on war that usually gets overlooked.

Hirohito thought he was a God. I love Japan, but no man will ever be a god on this planet. Not sure what to make of the film. Tv movie?
    • PBGray
Has that kind of feel. I was waiting for a Downy commercial in the middle of the trailer.
    • Daniel
The Emperor never thought he was a god... he was just built up to be devine by the conservative imperialist generals that effectively took over the government after the assassination of the last Prime Minister to try and curb military influence in the late 20s. This kind of deifying rhetoric isn't exclusive to Japan either; even in the US ultra-conservative militants frame their nationalist focal point - the constitution - as being divine or divinely inspired.
      • Carpola
That's a good point Daniel, but was part of Hirohito's surrender admitting that he wasn't a God? I watched a good documentary about the invention of the devil that had similar themes to what you said, the idea of good vs evil and how twisted folk got when carrying out these divine acts.
  • grimjob
Looks really good. Damn impressive budget for an indie.
  • Mikey
Oh Shit.... Matthew Fox (Jack Shephard) is back on a plane!!! WTF!!!
    • PBGray
I was waiting for him to crawl into a lighted tunnel at the end of a creek. I'm sure it'll be in the movie somewhere.
  • I know,right ?
...meh...after watching the excellent documentary series by Oliver Stone The Untold History of United States I can't take any of these so called history movies seriously...they all look too fake and over-glamourised...not calling it propaganda, don't get me does not look too bad for a movie though..
