After pulling in $484 million at the worldwide box office, 20th Century Fox quickly put together a sequel to Rio, the animated adventure comedy featuring Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg as two blue macaws. Now the studio has announced that Rio 2, which will arrive next spring, has pretty much everyone from the first film returning to reprise their voice roles. In addition to Hathaway and Eisenberg, will.i.am, Tracy Morgan, George Lopez, Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro, Bebel Gilberto, Jake T. Austin and Jamie Foxx will all be back. And there's also some new voices getting in on the fun as well. Read on!
The old cast members will be joined by Andy Garcia, Kristin Chenoweth, Rita Moreno, Amandla Stenberg, Rachel Crow, Natalie Morales singer Bruno Mars and Pierce Gagnon, the little kid from Looper. Carlos Saldanha is directing again, and the story finds Blu and Jewel living together with three little birds in their nest. Jewel decides the kids need to learn how to live like real birds outside of their city, so they decide to head into the Amazon. Blu struggles to get acquainted with his new neighbors and fears that he might lose his family to the wild.
As someone who wasn't particular impressed with the first film, I can't say I'm thrilled with the prospect of a sequel, but the story does sound relatively interesting. The voice cast is great and the music was fun the first time around, but this doesn't really seem like a must-see. But I'm sure there's plenty of kids who have loved singing along to the first film and can't wait to see all these talking animals back. How about you?
