Ian McKellen

After playing both Gandalf and Magneto in the blockbuster franchises Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and X-Men, veteran actor Sir Ian McKellen is taking on another iconic character from literature. ScreenDaily reports McKellen will play Sherlock Holmes in A Slight Trick of the Mind, based on Mitch Cullin's novel of the same name. Bill Condon is directing the film, and while you might think McKellen is too old to play Holmes, the story is actually set in 1947, following a long-retired Holmes living in a Sussex village with his housekeeper and rising detective son. But then he finds himself haunted by an unsolved 50-year old case.

Holmes memory isn't what it used to be, so he only remembers fragments of the case: a confrontation with an angry husband, a secret bond with his beautiful but unstable wife. Icon, See-Saw, FilmNation and BBC Films are behind the project along with Anne Carey, who says, "Mitch Cullin’s elegiac novel is not so much about solving a mystery, as it is about accepting life’s mysteries. It will certainly set it apart from all the recent Sherlock Holmes adaptations from Guy Ritchie and the two TV adaptations, "Sherlock" from BBC and "Elementary" from CBS, both with their own unique style, personality and quality writing.

Carey added, "I could not be more excited about the talent who have come together to make this film a reality.” The last time Condon and McKellen worked together, the result was Gods and Monsters, which garnered a win for the screenplay and also a nomination for McKellen. If the script form Jeffrey Hatcher (The Duchess) is up to snuff, maybe some more awards attention is in order. We'll certainly be looking forward to McKellen as an old Sherlock Holmes as we await The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug this holiday season and X-Men: Days of Future Past next summer.

Sounds boring. If there is no boxing, breasts or explosions like Sir Arthur O'Doyle would have wanted I will not see this film. It would not hurt to throw in a hiphop soundtrack as well. YOLO

Seems like this will be a more faithful movie adaptation than the RDj movies. Will look forward to this.

Maybe there's room for both, especially with an older Holmes. I'm a fan of the RDJ ones, which kind of surprised me how good they are.

        Definite room.
