IFP Launching a 'Secret Film Club' at the reRun Theater in Brooklyn

Secret Film Club

A secret film club?! That's our idea! For years, a good friend and I have thrown around the idea of hosting surprise screenings for fun. The Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) & Filmmaker magazine partnered with the reRun Theater in Brooklyn (Google Maps) and are launching this idea in what they've dubbed the "Secret Film Club". I want in already. For five days at the reRun, they're hosting free screenings that will be a complete secret. "The films screening – which will not be revealed publicly – will be a mix of acclaimed festival favorites with forthcoming theatrical releases and underappreciated recent independent titles."

So, don't expect Star Trek Into Darkness to play one night. Or, maybe do expect it. You never know, right? This is the first announcement of the series and thus, "for this inaugural edition, all screenings will be free, with audience members only required to RSVP." To do that, visit the Secret Film Club Eventbrite RSVP. Their pitch is solid though I'm not exactly sure how discussion will work: "Only very limited information will be available about each film prior to its showing, and audiences will be asked to refrain from going on social media to talk about the movies they’ve seen." Here's one of the best quotes from the press release:

"One of my favorite things about film festivals has always been surprise screenings, so the idea was to make a whole week of those,” said Filmmaker magazine’s Managing Editor, Nick Dawson. "I love that feeling of anticipation when the lights go down, and in the Secret Film Club we have an incredible lineup – both films that you've heard of and ones that you haven't – that we can't wait to share with audiences."

I love this idea. I would be there (if I wasn't going to be in Cannes). In fact, I'm honestly jealous that these guys put together a "Secret Film Club" and I hope everything runs very well. "IFP feels that the communal experience of watching films grows ever more important, and this is an innovative, immersive way of bringing exciting new cinema to audiences," said IFP Executive Director Joana Vicente. Indeed, and that's why I think this is genius. While I wish we had more information, at this point there's nothing more to say than to check out the listings, RSVP to some of the screenings, and wait to find out what they secretly show.

For those left frustrated at a lack of clues, they do mention on the RSVP page: "But…we can't say there won't be some delicious hints sprinkled about here and there." I'm sure the day after we'll hear all about the film they screened, but until then, it's a big mystery. It's Friday, 8/30/13. Just heard about this place. Does it show movies? I see no "now playing" listings. Is it closed for the summer? Or do I have to "know somebody" to get an answer?!
