Jason Statham in Talks to Spy with Melissa McCarthy's 'Susan Cooper'
Following an initial report from CinemaBlend after interviewing director Paul Feig, the spy comedy Susan Cooper starring Melissa McCarthy is lining up an action man for a lead role. For those who don't remember, the film was revealed earlier this summer and was described as the beginning of a potential franchise with the same tone as The Heat, featuring a more realistic approach to the spy action with some laughs as opposed to a spoof of the secret agent subgenre like Spy Hard with Leslie Nielsen. Now Deadline reports Jason Statham might head into the realm of comedy as he's already met with Feig about the film.
Negotiations are expected to begin very soon, but we're not sure how Statham's character comes into play. If we had to bet, McCarthy and Statham are spies who are forced to become partners. Though it might seem sudden for Statham to get into the comedy genre after years of doing all sorts of action films, he did get a breakthrough by starring in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, both of which are just as funny as they are violent. It should be interesting to see how he fares with a much more experience comedy star like McCarthy, but we're not sure when this project will get in front of cameras, so stay tuned.
