With a cast that already includes Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Martin Short, and Jena Malone, the adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's book Inherent Vice from The Master and Boogie Nights director Paul Thomas Anderson should be quite the anticipated film. Now the cast is getting even sweeter with Men in Black 3 scene stealer Josh Brolin taking an unknown key role. In addition, Deadline reports Brolin's Gangster Squad co-star Sean Penn is eye another role in the film about a stoner detective named Larry "Doc" Sportello (Phoenix) trying to solve the case of a kidnapped girl he used to date. Read on!
Brolin is a great addition to any cast, and he'll film Inherent Vice very soon before preparing to promote three films he has coming out this fall. Brolin stars in the sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, the remake of Oldboy from director Spike Lee, and Jason Reitman's Labor Day with Kate Winslet. Seeing Brolin working with Penn again on a film more worthy of their talents sounds fantastic, and having Anderson at the helm just makes that deal even sweeter. Its surprising to see that the director hasn't gone with a lot more of his familiar faces like Philip Seymour Hoffman and John C. Reilly yet, but we're not necessarily upset.
