Katie Holmes & Taylor Swift Join Jeff Bridges in 'The Giver' Adaptation
The Weinstein Company and Walden Media already have an impressive duo lined up for their adaptation of The Giver with Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep set to star in the film. Brenton Thwaites is leading the film about a 12-year-old boy who lives in a futuristic utopian society where all memory of human history has been erased. His life is thrown into turmoil when he is designated to inherit the role of the Giver and bear his community's vast range of human emotions, which causes him to realize that living a pain-free life comes at a high cost. Now THR reports Katie Holmes and Taylor Swift have landed roles in the film.
Bridges is playing the title old man while Streep is playing community's Chief Elder, who maintains order in the seemingly utopian society. Holmes has been lined up to play the boy's mother, who obeys the laws without question, but Swift's character has not been disclosed. The two join a cast that also includes Alexander Skarsgard as the boy's father and Cameron Monaghan ("Shameless") as his best friend Asher. Holmes has been low key on the big screen for awhile, so this is an interesting project for a return to the big screen. Swift was up for a role in Les Miserables, but it went to Samantha Barks from a stage adaptation.
