The Double Richard Ayoade

We're happy to report some fantastic news about one of our favorite indie films from this year's Toronto Film Festival. The second feature directed by Richard Ayoade, titled The Double, has just been acquired for US release by Magnolia Pictures. The indie distributor just made the announcement today, saying "we're thrilled to announce that we have acquired The Double! Starring Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) & Mia Wasikowska (Jane Eyre) and Directed & Co-Written by Richard Ayoade (Submarine)." The film will undoubtedly earn a cult following and earned quite a bit of praise (our review) at TIFF just last month.

For reference, here's the first TIFF teaser trailer for The Double that originally came out during the festival:

The Double is directed by Richard Ayoade (watch our TIFF interview with him here) who co-wrote the script with Avi Korine (brother of Spring Breakers director Harmony Korine), based on Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Double: A Petersburg Poem. The film follows Jesse Eisenberg as Simon, who arrives at work only to find an exact double of himself has usurped his tenuous position in the company. Routinely humiliated by his boss (played by Wallace Shawn), the neurotic Simon now has to deal with a doppelgänger that is everything he isn't: confident, charming, successful, superficial. Mia Wasikowska & Noah Taylor also star. The Double just premiered at the London & Toronto Film Fests. Magnolia hasn't set the release date, but it'll be out in 2014.
