More 'Twilight' Fan Fiction: 'Beautiful Bastard' Gets Film Adaptation
It's common knowledge that Fifty Shades of Grey, the pop culture sensation from British author E.L. James, started out as Twilight fan fiction. Universal snagged the rights to the book series for a film adaptation and the producers of The Social Network jumped on board to try to turn that erotic novel into a box office hit, but that isn't the end of Bella and Edward's influence on pop culture. THR reports that Constantin Films has just bought the rights to Beautiful Bastard, a new novel from Christina Lauren (which is the pen name of writers Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings) that also began as fan fic for the vampire series. Read on!
Originally published online as a story called The Office back in 2009, the plot has been reworked for the novel, which went on sale today. It follows Chloe Mills, a college student who interns at a huge media company and becomes enamored with her pain-in-the-ass boss, Bennett Ryan. The synopsis from Amazon:
An ambitious intern. A perfectionist executive. And a whole lot of name calling. Whip-smart, hardworking, and on her way to an MBA, Chloe Mills has only one problem: her boss, Bennett Ryan. He’s exacting, blunt, inconsiderate—and completely irresistible. A Beautiful Bastard.
Bennett has returned to Chicago from France to take a vital role in his family’s massive media business. He never expected that the assistant who’d been helping him from abroad was the gorgeous, innocently provocative—completely infuriating—creature he now has to see every day. Despite the rumors, he’s never been one for a workplace hookup. But Chloe’s so tempting he’s willing to bend the rules—or outright smash them—if it means he can have her. All over the office.
As their appetites for one another increase to a breaking point, Bennett and Chloe must decide exactly what they’re willing to lose in order to win each other.
Try not to roll your eyes so hard that they fall out of your head. Looks like erotic novels are nipping at the heels of young adult books to become hot movie properties, ironic since all of the erotic stuff seems to be stemming from women imagining the characters from those same YA works in more steamy situations. The whole thing is an ouroboros, and with tons of YA projects hitting the big screen soon (Beautiful Creatures, Mortal Instruments, Divergent, and more Hunger Games sequels), it looks like this trend is just heating up.
Weirdly, Jeremy Bolt (Event Horizon, Resident Evil, Death Race) will be producing Beautiful Bastard, and after taking a look at his filmography, he strikes me as a really strange choice to bring this book to life. No writer, director, or cast has been approached yet, but maybe "The League" star Paul Scheer could try out for the male lead since he did so well in his Fifty Shades audition. We'll have to see how this turns out.
