'Mud' Director Jeff Nichols Sets Up Shop at Warner Bros for Next Film
The studios are on the hunt for talented filmmakers, and the next one to make the jump is Jeff Nichols, director of Take Shelter and Mud, who I interviewed a few weeks ago. Deadline is reporting that Nichols has lined up a currently unnamed project at Warner Bros, with Jeff Robinov at the studio behind the deal. They're already saying "it will begin production in February", but don't provide any info on what or who or even the title. That said, we can assume almost with an absolutely certainty that Michael Shannon will be starring in it, though the rest of the details we're trying to piece together from bits of quotes around the web.
While the news on Deadline is very sparse, our friends at SlashFilm report: "We know that Nichols has been writing one film called Midnight Special, which he has called a sci-fi picture inspired by John Carpenter — Starman in particular — and which he calls 'a government chase film' and his own take on a sci-fi genre picture." Sounds awesome already. In addition, there's another project that Nichols mentioned to The Playlist in a recent interview, where he told them: "I want to make a 1960's biker film. I want to make a big, PG summer blockbuster family film, kind of like I want to revamp Tremors. I've got an idea for that. That kind of movie." That also sounds pretty damn cool already, especially from the mind of Jeff Nichols.
Our friends at The Film Stage have another quote from Nichols during this year's Sundance, where he explains his current situation: "I'm doing the same thing I did in the summer of 2008 where I’m writing two scripts at once. And so Midnight Special is going to be a genre film put through whatever bizarre filter is me. And then I'm writing this other movie based on a documentary that will hopefully be austere, quiet, sad, and beautiful." It seems WB would be more interested in Midnight Special over the other one.
Update: Confirming some basic details, Variety has posted on the news, adding that Michael Shannon is indeed confirmed to star. Shannon has starred in all three of Nichols past films. They also say it's described as "a present day sci-fi chase film", which sounds exactly like the Midnight Special project mentioned above.
For now, we're going to have to wait until info is out. However, as a very big fan of Jeff Nichols and all of his films, I felt it was important to keep putting him and his name in the news. I loved Mud and I'm happy it's doing so well in theaters and I'm already looking forward to Nichols' next, even if it is a big PG studio movie.
