Must Watch: Hugh Jackman Rages in New Trailer for 'The Wolverine'

May 21, 2013

The Wolverine

"Eternity can be a curse. A man can run out of things to live for." Honestly, the first domestic trailer for The Wolverine from director James Mangold was a little underwhelming for this writer. The international trailer that was released around the same time did a much better job of painting this sequel in the right light, but still getting the story and action across. However, there are still worries that this film is cut from the same mold as the less than stellar X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Well, this new trailer hits some of the same beats as the first, but is edited and presented in a much better way with some solid new action.

Here's the new trailer for James Mangold's The Wolverine from the film's YouTube Channel:

Based on the celebrated comic book arc by Chris Claremont & Frank Miller, The Wolverine finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.

James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Knight and Day) is directing The Wolverine from a script by Christopher McQuarrie and Mark Bomback who are adapting the classic 1982 story arc in the Wolverine comics, which takes our favorite Marvel mutant all the way to Japan. 20th Century Fox is releasing James Mangold's The Wolverine in theaters everywhere on July 26th later this summer. Are you excited now?

Looks like they've finally got Wolverine right, but will anyone who watched Origins go to see it?
    • Dominic
OK guys gotta STOP this criticism of :Origins . UNLESS you've actually read the source material for it . It was a 6-issue graphic novel ( which I have SOMEWHERE still ) done to literally re-invent his past. Once again( noted below ) because Marvel wanted to humanize him more . If you had bought/read the novels , you would know that the movie was a pretty close adaption of them . They didn't set out to please us hardcore Logan fans , they just took the movie from the 6-issue set . It fits the timelines of all the X-movies better , also . And the last scenes set up " Logan in Japan " it's a process , people ....

What?? Anyone who has read those comics would know how INaccurate Origins was-- it wasn't close to being faithful! It just glosses over that six-issue series in the cheesiest way possible, removing all of the important and interesting aspects. It took, like, a minute and a half-- how the hell can you faithfully adapt entire story in that amount of time? We criticize Origins BECAUSE we've read the damn books. Besides Origin, which was about was about his childhood and early years, there's also the matter of Barry Windsor-Smith's Weapon X, one of THE most important Wolvie stories ever written. Gonna claim that the film was faithful to that as well?
        • DeadManDann
          **an** entire story
          • Red X
BRAVO DEADMANDANN!!!! Obviously Dominic didnt read the "Orgins"
          • Dominic
:o) I'll go find it , somewhere in my 20 crates of CBs ...
        • Dominic
It's Hollywood whateve rage always has to be about the girl ... so yes the story separates after he walks out on Stryker and Victor .. and yes it's ignoring all of the Canadian stuff...but I don't think it was a bad movie after that . It just seems people wanna sound cool and pile on without knowing the source the base of why he became a loner is there and faithful to the graphic novels.
          • Nash
The whole point of people making movies is that other people don't have to read "source material".No, I didn't read it, I don't care for reading whatsoever. That's why I watch movies. I saw Origins and I didn't like it.

    Now that's a fucking trailer.
  • Jon Odishaw
Well this trailer has sold me
  • Mega samurai mayhem.
  • Would've been nice if they saved The Silver Samurai reveal for the film, but it was still pretty badass.
  • safichan
Lets put it this way...many people said iron man 3 trailer was good, but the flick end up like s** stop saying "i'm sold" shall we...this wolverine is just an ordinary trailer after all...
    • Cody W
IM 3 being shit is purely your opinion. I know many who thought it was great, me included.
      • safichan
Nope..its not my opinion entirely...ask rotten tomatoes...its officially shit...
        • The Splinter
its a pity that anyone really uses rotten tomatoes as a hub for defining a movie as good or not good. To me its your own damn fault for not enjoying the movie. Next time listen to your mom, if you do not have anything nice to say than don't say anything at all :)
          • Donatello
            Wise words Master Splinter
        • Max
Well if you ask RT you'll see that most reviews by fans and critics are positive. What the Hell are you talking about? You are so wrong
      • BWalsh
I agree, I thought IM3 was better than 2 (which I also didn't mind). Calling it 'shit' is pretty harsh. Maybe they're just mad because they were expecting Avengers 2.
  • Johnny Neat
I hope this isn't an excuse to weaken Wolverine permanently for future projects like they did to Superman in the books when they revamped (updated) him.
    • Dominic
this arc was gone to plenty of times in the CB , where he has to survive without his healing factor . It was about humanizing him , to appeal to a wider (female) audience . Standard stuff in superhero dramas . everything's a trilogy nowadays , so movie 3 he'll be better than ever .... Cause he used to be vicious as an alley cat , as he was introduced to us CB fans
  • dawko
Pretty mediocre trailer's gonna suck guys....Mangold can't do epic action, or even a nice trailer
  • Xerxexx
    Not sure.
  • JohnnyBoy
    @ 2:19 .....Real Steel 2
  • Bob
    Action scenes seems lame....
  • Damn!
  • toonfed
OMG!!! im so not there! doesn't looks atractive to me
  • Broseph Brosullini
It's still pretty meh. But, I never had high hopes for this movie to begin with.
  • Bob
this days, why action movies are given to such directors? ... Skyfall and now Wolverine...this guys could handle better jobs than action movies,or this is because of less action directors?
    • Dominic
hmmm a low opinion of action movies huh ?
  • Triton
This movie will most likely be PG-13, but I feel like it could really benefit from an R-rating. Maybe a future director's cut, perhaps?
  • Insider
Wolverine ORIGINS! This looks like a worthy sequel. Both look like garbage. They might as well have snaked Gavin Hood from Ender's Game and have him direct both. Clearly, they weren't shooting for something far superior.
  • Cody W
My absence of faith in Mangold seems to be ringing true.
  • David Banner
GOMEON! So they showed in the TRAILER that Jean Grey is in the movie, and that she is but a dream.....I don't get why they would show that in a trailer, spoils it. Well, here's to hoping for a hint that she will indeed resurrect and be in the 4th X-Men movie-or will they show that in the final trailer....
    • Dominic
it was a good bet that she was a dream anyway . I thought that when i saw her scene from the 1st trailer . And BTW , if they resurrect her , then it should be as the REAL Phoenix (one who woulda fried Logan at the end of XMan3 )which doesn't sound like what you want . :o) maybe you just like Famke ....
  • Michael Paterson
Oh sweet baby jesus I am stoked!
  • In current Japan, Wolverine is out of his profundity in an unfamiliar planet as he faces his extreme enemy in a last chance fight that will abandon him eternity altered. Defenseless despite anything that might have happened before and pushed to his physical points of confinement, he ...
