The cast of the next directorial effort from Seth MacFarlane was already impressive enough with the likes of Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, Sarah Silverman and Giovanni Ribisi involved. But now the western comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West has one more name to throw into the mix, and it's a good one. A press release from Universal Pictures (which also announces a co-financing partnership with Media Rights Capital) has revealed that "How I Met Your Mother" star and Broadway sensation Neil Patrick Harris will have some sort of role in the film, but no character details are known. More below!
For those just joining us, the story follows a cowardly sheep farmer (MacFarlane) who chickens out of a gunfight, causing his woman (Amanda Seyfried) to leave him. But that's just the beginning of the farmer's problems. The mysterious wife (Theron) of an outlaw rides into town, helps him find courage and makes him fall in love all over again. But when the woman's husband, a dangerous outlaw (Neeson), comes back to town, the farmer must stand up to the criminal to defend his honor. Silverman is playing a prostitute who will do pretty much anything she's paid for, but she will not have sex with her fiancé (Ribisi)because she's a Christian who believes a couple should wait until marriage.
The film reunites MacFarlane with his Ted producers Scott Stuber and Jason Clark, not to mention "Family Guy" collaborators and the film's co-writers Wellesley Wild and Alec Sulkin. Not to go overboard with complimenting MacFarlane, but I think he has the potential to be this generation's Mel Brooks. However, his skewering of pop culture on the big screen isn't quite as meta or full of lampooning. Ted took aim at 80s family comedies, and this one looks to send up westerns like Blazing Saddles. A Million Ways to Die in the West will hit theaters next summer on May 30th, 2014.
