'Portal' Short Film Director Dan Trachtenberg to Helm 'Y: The Last Man'
by Ethan Anderton
January 9, 2013
Back in August of 2011, we featured an incredible short film called Portal: No Escape, a trailer for a movie that didn't really exist, inspired by the video game Portal. On its own, the project was more than impressive, and now director Dan Trachtenberg (who is one of the hosts of Totally Rad Show) is turning that success into a bigger career. Deadline has word that Trachtenberg has been hired to direct the long gestating adaptation of the graphic novel Y: The Last Man, which once had directors like D.J. Caruso and Louis Leterrier involved. Last fall we heard New Line Cinema was making the project a priority and here we go.
For those who are unfamiliar with the comic book, it takes place after a mysterious plague kills nearly all the world's male mammals overnight. The story follows a magician named Yorick who's the only male survivor and his male pet monkey named Ampersand that set out to find what may have wiped out the male chromosomes. The comic was first published by Vertigo in 2002 and currently has around 60 issues which were repackaged in a single book. If Portal: No Escape is any indicator, Trachtenberg has immense respect for existing properties and knows how to handle sci-fi. This could be the start of a very lucrative career.
