Now that Steve Carell has dabbled in action comedy by way of Get Smart and Date Night, and romance in the form of Crazy Stupid Love, it's time to combine the two. That's Universal's plan as they have Carell attached to star in and produce an untitled FBI wedding comedy written by Field of Dreams and Sneakers writer Phil Alden Robinson. Considering past work, we're betting Robinson wrote a script that focused more on the action and drama, as Deadline says David Flebotte, who has worked on a variety of TV series like "Ellen" and "Boardwalk Empire," will rewrite it, likely to amp up the comedy with the action.
The project is described as being similar to Stakeout and My Best Friend's Wedding. Each are fine representations of their respective sungenres, where Stakeout had great comedy mixed with decent intrigue and My Best Friend's Wedding was a funny and touching romantic comedy. As of now, we're not sure where the plot of the film will take us, but I'm betting some kind of criminal wants revenge on the FBI agents tying the knot, their wedding is crashed by the bad guys, and their honeymoon turns into a game of cat and mouse. With Carell involved, I'm hoping it doesn't get too goofy like Get Smart and has some substance.
