Steven Spielberg to Direct 'American Sniper' Starring Bradley Cooper

Bradley Cooper

Director Steven Spielberg is going from directing a biopic about the assassinated 16th President of the United States to a movie about a trained marksman. Deadline has word that DreamWorks has set Spielberg to direct American Sniper, a project that has had Bradley Cooper attached since last May and had Silver Linings Playbook director David O. Russell circling last fall. Cooper is producing the project through his newly established 22nd & Indiana banner and the film is actually based on Navy SEAL Chris Kyle's autobiography American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History.

Jason Hall, who wrote the forthcoming Paranoia with Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman and Liam Hemsworth, is behind the script which tells the story of how Kyle racked up the most confirmed kills for an American during his time in the armed forces, and is punctuated with passages from Kyle's wife detailing how his affections turned from her to the SEALs and the war. Kyle was a man passionate weaponry and marksmanship and spent his time teaching others how to shoot, but he met his end when a fellow discharged veteran gunned him down at a Texas shooting range. The film is said to chronicle Kyle's life from a rodeo cowboy to the SEAL Chief with the highest number of sniper kills in U.S. military history. Sounds like an interesting film for Spielberg to take on after Lincoln, and we'll be sure to keep you posted.

I hope Kyle's family is getting paid for this! I felt his story was always worthy of the big screen, but far to often it seems nobody makes those movies until the subject has passed on. Old Hollywood trick to avoid having to pay for the story. But I will go see it to honor a great man!

Can't wait to see the part where he's on the Opie and Anthony show talking about punching Jesse Ventura in the face at a bar.

I have a soft spot for sniper flicks, something about ghillie suits and exploding heads that just never gets old.

No....Definitely NOT...NOP in every way....I think Spilberg don't must stick to political , war or anti-war movies. After War Horse and Lincoln he must change the subject. I think Ridly Scott choose his next project better than Steven this days (both huge fan) He doesn't must leave the ROBOCALYPSE. It becomes legacy of him. I think his decision for cheaper Robocalypse was worst decision of his carrier. Robocalypce needs his vision and mastermind and bloody creative ultra-modern special effects. This is ROBO+APOCALYPSE!!! . I think weakness of END of war of the worlds came from its budget too, not directing nor story. Tin Tin , War Horse , Lincoln had low special effect or action sequences too (deliberately or not deliberately) (not fan of mindless action movies), I really love Prometheus and its big spectacular scoop. SiFi ever win. I think the ROBOCALYPSE is perfect choise for him. Don't Miss It Man.

I 100% agree with you Ehsan, I just want Robopocalypse so I hope another director swipes it out from under him (if that's even contractually possible).

Sounds like 1941 all over again

Kyle was a pussy. 160 kills? The best in the American army, but compared to the rest of the world a blip. Finnish sniper Simo Hayha had over 550 confirmed kills of Nazi soldiers in world war 2, and guess what? All iron sights, he said telescopic sniper sights through him off. The soviet sniper lyudmila Pavlichenko doubled Kyles kill count at 309 confirmed making her the greatest female sniper of all time.

Simo Hayha killed Russians in the Winter War, not Nazis, Which is even more badass considering the Winter War only lasted half a year.
