Summit Entertainment Has Already Hired Writers to Script 'RED 3'

It's getting to the point that having a studio put a sequel into development before the first film or next sequel hits theaters isn't really a showing of faith in the property. Essentially, it just means the studio wants to be prepared as soon as possible if the film turns out to be a hit. And that's likely what's being done at Summit Entertainment with a report from THR revealing that the Lionsgate division of the studio has hired Jon and Erich Hoeber to script RED 3, a sequel to their two previous films about a dangerous group of retired special operatives featuring Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren and more. Read on!

The second film doesn't even hit theaters until late August, so if it turns out well for Summit and Lionsgate, it sounds like they want to be ready as soon as possible, perhaps in an effort for the third film to hit theaters the year following. This seems to be the new trend for studios eager to keep their franchises relevant and not leave so much time between sequels. Universal is in the midst of getting Fast and Furious 7 together for release next summer and Fast and Furious 6 hits theaters next Friday. It's barely over a year of turnaround from production start to release. We're hoping this doesn't become too popular of a notion, because films do not need to be rushed for an audience who would rather have a better movie later than a mediocre movie now. We'll find out later this year if RED 2 is good enough to even warrant another sequel.

Red was solid fun, but it didn't scream 'make this a franchise NOW!' to me. I'm not very interested in the 2nd film even...and I don't really think it's "July tentpole" material.

Dig it. Loved the first one, excited for the 2nd.
  • So they're pretty sure RED 2 will be a hit...

The first one was OK, but this isn't The Fast and The Furious territory.

I'll bet Red2 is twice as good as Expendables 2...
