After making a splash awhile back with The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, director Anne Fletcher didn't fare too well with the comedy pairing of Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand in The Guilt Trip. Now she's heading into different romantic comedy territory with a project called Murder Mystery. The Weinstein Company announced today that their TWC-Dimension arm is working with Endgame on the "action whodunit comedy" with Fletcher directing from a script by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, The Amazing Spider-Man). You can decipher what the inciting incident is, but there's a bit more.
The press release says the film follows a married couple who takes the honeymoon they never had in hopes of saving their struggling marriage. But the two soon find themselves in the middle of their very own murder mystery when one of their fellow cruise passengers is found dead. They must travel across Europe to discover the true murderer’s identity while trying to reignite the spark to their relationship. We're not sure why these two have to travel across Europe to solver the mystery unless they're law enforcement agents, but whatever. The Weinstein duo says, "Murder Mystery is a throwback to Agatha Christie novels with a comedic spin," so hopefully audiences are interested in that.
