Adam McKay Offered to Direct Marvel's 'Ant-Man', But Likely Passing

Adam McKay

Following yesterday's report that Adam McKay, Ruben Fleischer and Rawson Marshall Thurber were on the shortlist to replace departed director Edgar Wright on Marvel's Ant-Man, it sounds like the studio has made a quick decision. AICN reports it will be Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Step Brothers director Adam McKay reuniting with Paul Rudd for his first non-comedy film. Of course, there's supposed to be a good amount of laughs in this flick, but it's an entirely different kind of movie for McKay, so we're interested in seeing what he can do, especially since The Boys adaptation doesn't seem to be progressing.

McKay's previous work with Rudd probably made him a desirable choice, and even though his strengths are in straight up comedy, those films have been mainstream studio comedies, some with big set pieces like NASCAR in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and even action sequences in The Other Guys. As we pointed out, with production being so close to starting, the big parts of the movie have already been storyboarded and previsualized, so it's a lot of pointing and shooting to get the job done. However, it'll be nice to have someone with this much experience guiding the film, even if we wish Wright was still on board.

Update: Well that didn't take long! McKay took to Twitter to clear up the situation about his involvement:

From the sounds of it, with that last sentence about "not sure it can work," it sounds like he's passing on this and will leave the spot open for another director. While there is a shortlist of replacement directors going around, including Ruben Fleischer and Rawson Marshall Thurber, we're not sure if one of them will get the offer instead, but we'll definitely be watching the news closely for any official updates. Stay tuned from here.

I like it. Release a photo of Rudd in his suit dammit! Good luck Mr. McKay! Re-watch The Other's a gem of a comedy. I hated my first go but I fell in love with it after multiple viewings.

I'll just copy n paste what I wrote previously on the Ant-Man director's shortlist article. "While everyone is rooting for Fleischer because of his previous films, I think we are all forgetting The Russo Brothers directed the new Captain America film. I would totally like to see Adam McKay take on Ant-Man. He has also worked with Paul Rudd previously. Adam McKay can direct some great unexpected scenes and can definitely handle comedy well." Time to grab my victory cigar and a good drink.

Well that's a shame. Marvel call Wright back and apologize!
    • Agreed. McKay can handle it. He would have done a fine job. However, Let's suck it up, give Wright his final cut (or whatever it is he was demanding) and make a great film. I still don't get the dispute. It isn't like Wright has a bad record. Marvel, give up whatever control you have on the project and let Wright work his magic! Now back to drinking my growler seasonal IPA from Washington State.

        Indeed good sir.

Well that's disappointing McKay turned it down. That being said I honestly think Marvel should just delay Ant-Man another year. If the rumours about the current script is true they should definitely take time to fix it. Also delaying Ant-Man wouldn't hurt Marvel anyway. They already have Avengers 2 coming and DC delayed their own big one to 2016.

Delaying Ant-Man may hurt Marvel's plans for Phase 3. Not sure how significant to everything Ant-Man is, but that could be their reasoning for not wanting to delay it.

Here's a crazy idea: Let Tarantino do it! Whoops, time to go back to the asylum.

Tarantino or Rodriguez would be the only 2 directors on this planet that could pick up where Edwards left off. Adam Mckay is an okay director, Other Guys was decent, and Talladega Nights was his only good movie, partly because of Sasha Baron Cohen, seriously all of his movies are only funny if you smoke a lot of weed and drink booze, have an IQ below 70, and if think SNL and Modern Family are great shows! I hope they get someone quick, I have a sneaky feeling Michael Bay's name is about to be mentioned soon regarding this film...
