Sony Pictures previously had the video game adventure comedy Pixels set for release on May 15th, 2015. However, the studio has decided to step out of the way of Mad Max: Fury Road (watch the teaser trailer) and the musical sequel Pitch Perfect 2 and set the Adam Sandler-led comedy for release on July 24th, 2015. The film sees intergalactic aliens misinterpreting the video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them and attack the Earth, using the games as models for their various assaults around the world. President Will Cooper (Kevin James) has to call on his childhood best friend, ’80s video game champion Sam Brenner (Sandler), now working as a home theater installer, to help defeat them all.
It's up to Brenner to lead a team of old-school arcade gamers (including Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad) to defeat the aliens and save the planet. Michelle Monaghan plays the team's unique weapons specialist, likely responsible for some kind of artillery specially made to handle the pixelated charaters. Chris Columbus is directing the film which will now do battle at the box office with Sanlder's longtime friend and Funny People director Judd Apatow, whose comedy Trainwreck starring Amy Schumer is set for that same weekend. Seems odd to have two comedies like this square off, but Sandler's will be for families while Apatow's will be R-rated, so it should work out. Cool?
