Alan Alda Heads to Nicholas Sparks Territory for 'The Longest Ride'
Following yesterday's debut of the trailer for The Best of Me, yet another romance based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, we have news about development of an adaptation of another book from the author. Deadline reports Fox 2000 has set veteran actor Alan Alda to star in The Longest Ride from director George Tillman Jr. (Soul Food, Men of Honor, Notorious). The story follows a man snowbound and stuck in his car after a major crash on an isolated road. As he is stranded, he drifts in and out of consciousness, flashing back to the love of his life, who died sometime earlier. But there's another romance involved too.
You might remember that Scott Eastwood, son of iconic actor and director Clint Eastwood, has already been lined up for a role in this adaptation. He's playing a handsome bull rider named Luke who falls in love with a young art history major named Sophia. But Luke has a a secret that might destroy their future. As these two men find their lives slipping away from them in different ways, a strange occurrence may allow these two generations of lovers to save each other.
Is there some kind of sci-fi element in the story we don't know about? That would be a nice change of pace for a Sparks novel, and I liked that combination of genres in The Lake House. At the very least, we have some hope that this will be slightly less formulaic with (500) Days of Summer and The Spectacular Now writers Michael H. Weber and Scott Neustadter writing the script along with lesser known writers Craig Bolotin and Brad Desch. Are you interested at all?
