Sorry to disappoint fans of Magic Mike, but The Playlist has confirmed that Matthew McConaughey won't be back for the sequel Magic Mike XXL. So all you lawbreakers will just have to settle for the return of Channing Tatum. Though he's not the only returning cast members since Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello are also coming back. There's supposed to be more, but director Greg Jacobs wouldn't say anything else. But then came reports from Variety and Deadline that some ladies were getting in on the fun with Groundhog Day star Andie MacDowell and The Matrix Reloaded star Jada Pinkett-Smith joining.
As for the story, we finally know what's happening in the sequel as it will follow our team of male exotic dancers going to a strippers' convention. It's not clear if Tatum's protege, The Kid played by Alex Pettyfer is returning, but it doesn't sound like he would be a huge part of the sequel anyway. As for MacDowell, we're not sure who she's playing, but the actress starred in Soderbergh's first feature film, Sex, Lies and Videotape, so this should be a fun reunion. But Pinkett-Smith, on the other hand, has been revealed to play a strip club owner, a role that was originally written for a male actor, so that's pretty cool. Magic Mike is already slated to hit theaters next summer on July 1st, 2015. Stay tuned for more.
UPDATE: The Wrap also reports that Machete Kills and Drive Angry star Amber Heard has taken a lead role in Magic Mike XXL, though specifics on her character were not revealed. There are certainly a lot more ladies getting in on the fun this time.
