Anthony Mackie Playing Jimi Hendrix But Not for Paul Greengrass
A few years ago, Captain America: The Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie was slated to star in a biopic about the late, iconic rock star Jimi Hendrix in a film called Crosstown Traffic. At the time, The Bourne Ultimatum and Captain Phillips director Paul Greengrass was attached to direct, but when Hendrix's estate objected over the portrayal of Hendrix in the film, the project fell apart. However, Deadline has learned those issues have been resolved, and now Mackie is ready to pick up the guitar again in the film that will be directed by Ol Parker (Imagine Me & You) and is now simply called Jimi. And there's more!
Thandie Newton (Crash) is on board to take a role, and Noomi Rapace is wanted to take the role of Hendrix's former girlfriend Kathy Etchingham (they actually look very similar). The film itself won't chronicle the rise of Hendrix to one of the most legendary rock stars of his time, but instead focuses on the last nine days of Hendrix's life. Mackie seems to be on the rise with much more prominent roles, especially since The Winter Soldier. He just joined the Christmas comedy from director Jonathan Levine alongside Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and this lead role sounds very promising. Interested?
