Charlie Hunnam & Margot Robbie to Climb the 'Mountain Between Us'
It seems everyone in Hollywood wants Charlie Hunnam and Margot Robbie for everything. Hunnam is following up Pacific Rim with roles in King Arthur and is wanted for the remake of Escape from New York while Robbie is riding her breakthrough role in The Wolf of Wall Street into the jungle with Tarzan, a co-starring role with Will Smith in Focus and a lead action role in Ghost in the Shell. Now the two hot stars will come together in The Mountain Between Us, an adaptation of Charles Martin's book of the same name name set up at Fox 2000 & Chernin Entertainment, fresh off Dawn of the Planet of the Apes this year.
Deadline says Paradise Now director Hany Abu-Assad will be at the helm of the film which is a story of romance and survival in the snowy mountains. Ashley is a writer catching a flight from Salt Lake City and heading East for her wedding. Ben is a doctor returning from a medical conference. When their flight is cancelled, the strangers agree to charter a ride. But instead of a back-up ride, they get a disaster in the making as the pilot suffers a heart attack and the plane crashes into a desolate snowy mountain region. Ben breaks his ribs and Ashley suffers a leg fracture. Fortunately, aside from a doctor he’s an avid climber, and a romance sparks as the two try to survive in the harsh face of nature.
Under any other circumstances, this would sound cheesy and hokey, but with Hany Abu-Assad, it has the potential to be a powerful drama, and not just a silly love story. And by the time this gets made, Hunnam and Robbie will likely be much bigger names, and should have no problem bringing in an audience. But because the two are so busy right now, there's no telling when the project, which has a script from J. Mills Goodloe and Scott Frank, will get off the ground. Here's hoping the project doesn't get lost in the shuffle, or get put aside if Hunnam and Robbie don't impress audiences.
