Guillermo del Toro Hopes End of 'Pacific Rim 2' Leads to Third Film
We already know that Pacific Rim 2 will hit theaters on April 7th, 2017, but if it wasn't for the impressive box office performance of the sci-fi blockbuster overseas, we probably wouldn't be getting that sequel. But Guillermo del Toro is shooting for the moon when it comes to his plans for the kaiju vs. jaeger sequel, and he hopes that the end of Pacific Rim 2 will end up leading to Pacific Rim 3, which hasn't been greenlit or anything yet. But in order to make it more likely, del Toro is getting a little ambitious and hopeful by writing the second film with an eye towards having it tie directly into a third film. Read on!
Speaking with Collider about plans for the sequel, del Toro said:
"The direction we’re going is very different from the first. Some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say ‘Let’s hope we have three movies.’ So some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one."
The director previously said that an animated series will bridge the gap between the first and second film because the sequel will be in a very different place than what we saw at the end of the first film. But when it comes to Pacific Rim 2 heading into Pacific Rim 3, it sounds like we might get a cliffhanger akin to The Matrix Reloaded or Back to the Future Part II. We're just wondering which characters will get held back this time and won't show up until the end of the movie. Hopefully whatever del Toro has planned it's good enough to convince audiences to see it, and the studio to greenlight a third movie.
Previously, del Toro hinted at some elements they would touch upon in the sequel, "We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure. Second thing is you’re gonna see a merging of Kaiju and Jaeger. And that is quite special. We’ve drifted with a Kaiju brain. Well, then start riffing on that and you’ll get to something." Production is slated to begin fall next year, and we really can't wait to see where this sci-fi franchise goes. How about you?
