Mae Whitman Gets a Terrible Label in Trailer for 'The DUFF' Comedy

Though Mae Whitman may have become known for being rather plain as Michael Cera's girlfriend Ann in "Arrested Development," the actress is anything but frumpy now. However, that hasn't stopped her from being labeled The DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) in a new comedy from CBS Films. It's basically Mean Girls meets She's All That, however, it doesn't seem like it will have the surprising charm and hilarity or staying power of either. If this is supposed to be a trailer for a comedy, there should probably be more than just a couple solid laughs. At the very least Whitman seems like she could make it work. Watch below!

Here's the first trailer for Ari Sandel's The DUFF, straight from CBS Films:

Bianca (Mae Whitman) is a content high school senior whose world is shattered when she learns the student body knows her as ‘The DUFF’ (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her prettier, more popular friends (Skyler Samuels & Bianca Santos). Now, despite the words of caution from her favorite teacher (Ken Jeong), she puts aside the potential distraction of her crush, Toby (Nick Eversman), and enlists Wesley (Robbie Amell), a slick but charming jock, to help reinvent herself, shut down her nemesis (Bella Thorne) and save her senior year from turning into a total disaster. The DUFF is directed by Ari Sandel (Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show), written by Josh A. Cagan (Bandslam) and CBS Films releases it sometime in 2015.
