McConaughey Chats About Ambitious Nature of Nolan's 'Interstellar'
Now that we're a few months into 2014, it's time for our first reminder that later this year we'll be getting Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, which will likely feature yet another phenomenal performance from the it man, Matthew McConaughey. The actor, receiving acclaim and Oscar nominations for his work in Dallas Buyers Club, Wolf of Wall Street, Mud, Magic Mike even Killer Joe, spoke to Variety about his career comeback and recent highlights, and talked briefly about working on Nolan's Interstellar, his next science fiction project that was quietly filmed last year. It's the most ambitious thing he's ever done," he states.
The full interview covers McConaughey's diverse range of work from A Time to Kill to Dallas Buyers Club to "True Detective", but the there are some good quotes when he talks about Interstellar at the very end. He won't reveal anything, but did tell Variety these few interesting quotes about Nolan's wormhole sci-fi movie:
"Here's what I can tell you," before slipping into the third person. "It's the most ambitious thing he's ever done. And he's done some ambitious stuff."
McConaughey had run into Nolan over the years, but it was at an event about two years ago he says the director first praised his work. "He came up to me and said, 'Mud. I love that movie,'" McConaughey recalls. He was later asked to fly to Los Angeles to meet with Nolan. "I sat down with him for about 2½ hours at his house," he recalls. "Not one word came up about Interstellar. I walked out not sure what to think. I mean, he's not a guy who takes general meetings."
Following up those quotes, strangely, Variety got a quote from Nolan himself. "Matthew works from the inside out," Nolan says. "He approaches a character from a deep human understanding, refusing to take shortcuts to an emotional connection with the audience — all while never losing sight of the demands of the overall narrative." Then, back to McConaughey, he also speaks highly of working with Nolan: "There's no fucking around on set… He's a great problem solver. In that way, he's very indie. Here's a guy who could have whatever budget he wants — and we finished shooting early." That's a bit crazy. But Nolan did just speak at Slamdance, of all places, so he does have that indie spirit still burning inside. This is good to hear.
That's all from McConaughey on Interstellar, even though they also briefly mention Gus Van Sant's Sea of Trees. To wrap, since this isn't the last we'll be hearing from McConaughey, he ends with this: "For the next two months, I'm playing the character of Matthew McConaughey, an actor proud of the films he's been in." As well he should be - his last few films have been great. We'll see if he wins the Oscar in a few more weeks.
