Michelle Monaghan Joining Adam Sandler's 'Pixels' Arriving in 2015
Fresh of an acclaimed supporting turn on the first season of the stellar HBO series "True Detective," actress Michelle Monaghan is going in a completely different direction with a role in the sci-fi adventure action comedy Pixels starring Adam Sandler. Based on a short film of the same name, the film follows an attack of aliens on the world after they misinterpret video feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them, using the games as models for their attacks. The only people who can stop the aliens are a group of video game experts played by Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad and Peter Dinklage. More below!
Now we also have some details on the dynamic between these four unlikely heroes. Sandler is a former video game champion, now leading a miserable life as a home theater installer and Dinklage is playing his brash former video game-playing nemesis. It should be interesting to see Sandler and Dinklage at each other's throats. Meanwhile Gad plays a conspiracy-theory-obsessed genius with really bad social skills and James plays the U.S. president, turning to his childhood best friend to help save the planet. Video game characters attacking the world sounds crazy, but James as president is the most unbelievable part of the movie. As for Monaghan, THR reports she'll play a weapons developer who also turns out to be a love interest for Sandler.
This concept is so awesome, but we hope Sandler doesn't turn it into a stupid comedy with dumb fart jokes and terrible writing (director Chris Columbus should help prevent that). Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures says, "Pixels is the perfect showcase for Adam Sandler's brand of all-audience comedy. Adam and Chris have created a story that will deliver truly unique action, comedy and special effects and bringing back beloved arcade-game characters in a delightfully original manner." The studio is securing video game character rights now, so stay tuned for moret. Pixels will arrive in the summer of 2015.
