If the pure 80s nostalgia of seeing the animated series Jem and the Holograms coming to the big screen wasn't enough, then this next development in the live-action adaptation should spice things up a bit. We've already gotten a first look at the relatively unknown cast playing the title characters including Audrey Peeples as Jem and Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau and Hayley Kiyoko as the Holograms. Now THR has word of 80s teen icon Molly Ringwald joining the cast of Jon M. Chu's film, but her role is unknown. The same can be said for Juliette Lewis, who Deadline separately reported as a new addition to the cast too.
We're not all that hip to the intricacies of the animated series, so fans will have to guess who these actresses could play. Lewis led her own band called Juliette and the Licks until 2009 before she went solo, so maybe she'll play the lead singer of a rival band? she made for an interesting adversary for Ellen Page in Whip It so that would be fun. As for Ringwald, she hasn't been too busy outside of ABC Family projects and cameos poking fun at her career's past, but she's the perfect addition to a film that finds its roots in the neon 80. Ringwald also sings from time-to-time with a jazz group, so maybe both of these stars will sing in the film?
For those who know nothing about the original cartoon, the film will follow an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation. She and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt -- one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father. Since the main cast was announced, Step Up Revolution actor Ryan Guzman has taken the role of a love interest named Rio. This movie just sounds like something wild and crazy, and maybe it shouldn't exist, but that could also make it ridiculously fun.
