Park Chan-wook Set to Direct Futuristic Sci-Fi Thriller 'Second Born'
After making his English-language debut last year, director Park Chan-wook is ready to venture into new genre territory in the United States now. Variety reports the director of the South Korean Vengeance trilogy (which includes the original Oldboy) will be at the helm of Second Born, a sci-fi thriller from Rumble Films, the production banner fresh off producing the incredible indie hit Whiplash with Miles Teller and riveting thriller Nightcrawler starring Jake Gyllenhaal. The film is set in the future where neural microchip implants are used to store the consciousness of people, leading to black market body-swapping. Read on!
The original script comes from newcomer David Jagernauth and will be developed by Park Chan-wook for the big screen, which should make what might otherwise be a fairly generic concept turn into something much more compelling. It sounds like the film is early in development though since there's no set time for production to begin, and a cast still needs to be assembled too. Chan-wook has a wholly unique visual style and has a knack for pretty grisly violence and a generally dark tone. Stoker may not have been a runaway hit, but it wasn't without merits, and I'm interested to see what else Chan-wook can do here in the US.
