Ricky Gervais & Eric Bana Team for 'Special Correspondents' Remake
If Seth Rogen teaming up with Christian Bale for Danny Boyle's forthcoming biopic about Apple co-founder Steve Jobs wasn't weird enough, another peculiar collaboration is happening, this time in the world of comedy. Variety reports Ricky Gervais and Eric Bana will star in a remake of the French comedy Special Correspondents, the story of a struggling New York-based radio journalist (Bana) whose arrogance and decadent lifestyle has hindered his career. So he decides to fake front line war reports from the comfort of his hideout above a Spanish restaurant in Manhattan. So basically a funnier Wag the Dog.
The original film actually followed French officials mobilizing to gain the release of two kidnapped journalists in Iraq, but only the victims know the crime has been faked. That actually sounds somewhat more interesting than premise of the remake, but this still sounds like it could be an interesting comedy. Gervais will write, direct and produce the film in addition to co-starring with Bana, though it's not clear who the British comedian will play in the film. The project is just now being sold at the American Film Market as a co-production between Bron Studios and Unanimous Entertainment in association with Creative Wealth Media Finance, so we'll see if it actually gets off the ground. Sound good?
