Scarlett Johansson Has an Offer to Lead 'Ghost in the Shell' Instead
Though The Wolf of Wall Street and About Time star Margot Robbie was previously reported to be in talks to lead Ghost in the Shell, a live-action adaptation f the iconic Japanese manga of the same name set up at DreamWorks, those talks haven't worked out, and she's no longer linked to the project. However, in a report from Deadline about the actress closing in on a deal to star in Suicide Squad, with Ryan Gosling, Will Smith and Tom Hardy also circling, it's noted that Lucy and The Avengers star Scarlett Johansson now has an offer for $10 million to take the lead role instead. And that sounds like perfect casting. More below!
The only downside is that the role feels a little familiar considering her action work as Black Widow in the Marvel cinematic universe. For those who don't know, Ghost in the Shell follows a female member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime. The script comes from William Wheeler (of The Hoax and "The Cape") with Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) directing, and with all the love leading ladies are seeing at the box office when it comes to action roles, this could be a big hit, especially with Scarlett Johansson on board. But we'll see if she takes the offer or not. Stay tuned.
