The Last of Us

The building block game Minecraft just got picked up for film treatment, and now the hit Playstation 3 video game The Last of Us is poised to hit the big screen as well. Deadline has word that Screen Gems, the company behind the Resident Evil franchise, will distribute a live-action adaptation of the pandemic ravaged open world game with Sam Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures banner producing. The game studio Naughty Dog will have their co-presidents Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra working as the "creative architects" along with the game's creative director Neil Druckmann and director Bruce Straley.

For those who don't know anything about The Last of Us, here's a cool game trailer:

The game follows two characters, hardened survivor Joel and the young and capable Ellie, who join forces to try and survive in a radically transformed world some 20 years after an infectious pandemic has ravaged humanity. Joel had a life before the pandemic, while the world of the pandemic is all that Ellie has ever known. As part of Joel's job to smuggle Ellie out of the quarantine zone, they have to make it past roving gangs of human scavengers not unlike themselves, military installations and infected civilians. The game is intense and has a great story that could certainly be turned into a cool movie. Video game movies haven't had much luck, but maybe Raimi can round up some great talent to make it work. Thoughts?

The Last of Us was better / more entertaining than any movie released in 2013, so if they can translate that experience into a film it should be pretty great.

      Completely agree.

Wow I am in the course of playing this game right now! This is really right up Rami's alley!

Is this really needed to make a movie from the game Last of Us? Last of Us already felt like a cinematic moving film in it's own with its characters and story. I believe a movie featuring actors and simply condensed to two short hours would ruin the experience further more the game brought. Yes there is so much that can be properly translated unlike any other video game property but it's simply not necessary. And honesty the initial concept has been done to death within many films. Sam Raimi has even also gone out of style over the years with his last film (The dreadful Oz). He was once a great creator but not anymore. The Last of Us should be left to video games and not live action.

All that I see working is a sequeln

I agree that this is a concept that's been done before. It's basically The Road mixed with Children of Men, with a dash of I Am Legend. The thing that made it stick out was the characters.

Do not cast Ellen Page...that's too obvious. Actually cast a 14 year old. Wouldn't mind seeing Mark Ruffalo as Joel but he may struggle with the accent Baker used. Keanu Reeves also comes to mind but lots do not like him acting wise. Maybe Michael Fassbender or hell Russell Crowe works imo...Hugh Jackman...too easy. The casting for Joel is gonna be a hot button issue.

I think Ellen Page was actually pissed off that they made Ellie look like her, so who knows if she'd even take the role unless the paycheck is huge. And isn't she almost 30? She looks younger, but she doesn't look 14. They should get an unknown, no generic young actresses like Chloe Moretz.

The fact that so many of the people behind the game are working on the movie gives me a glimmer of hope. But who knows. I agree that it is completely unnecessary, but it has the potential of being a decent movie. The characters will never be as great as in the game though.

Raimi is awful now but hey you never know.

I so hope they use the same score or get Santaolalla to compose again.
