There's already been a slew of re-edits of the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens from the hilarious "Special Edition" by George Lucas to the trailer presented in the style of director Wes Anderson. But since they're all just re-purposed footage from the original teaser trailer, we've still been missing Han Solo, Princess Leia and other familiar heroes. But "Saturday Night Live" has us covered in their trailer parody that pokes fun at the older versions of the characters. If the cross guard lightsaber wasn't different enough for you, Luke Skywalker gets a new one that fits his namesake and age a little better. Watch below!

Here's the "Saturday Night Live" parody of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer from Hulu:

  • My favorite was when it aired live with unfinished effects everywhere. The walker wasn't made of lightsabers when it aired live either. There were probably there or four green-screens were left un-keyed, as well. It was pretty rough overall. I wonder if they just aired the wrong video file of a rough cut, or if they legitimately didn't have it finished by air time rolled around. Either way, it was a rare misstep by SNL's digital shorts department.
    • Yeah, someone definitely aired the wrong version of the video during the broadcast. Huge mistake.

I was at the National Association of Broadcaster's conference two years ago and got to sit on on the Digital Shorts panel. The timeline they have to work with is insane - basically they have a week to write, shoot, and edit these pieces. They said that multiple times they're putting the finishing effects and encoding the footage as the show is going live. I'm surprised they haven't done this before!
        • I would've loved to have seen that panel! I went to NAB earlier this year and there weren't any really cool panels like that :( I guess we probably know what happened with this video then. They had a tough one on their hands. SOOOO many effects to complete.

Yeah, it was an awesome panel - they explained how they did the Louis CK / Lincoln intro during the NYC blackout - super crazy.

Heh, indeed, was wondering why there were lightsaber sounds with the walker.
