Tom Hardy / Apocalypse

While Tom Hardy was recently listed as being up for a role in the forthcoming DC Comics adaptation Suicide Squad, the first film that will follow Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, he's got another comic book project chasing him too. The Wrap reports that The Dark Knight Rises and Inception star is also being courted for the titular villain role in X-Men: Apocalpyse. Funnily enough, Hardy was also shortlisted to once be up for the role of Doctor Strange along with Benedict Cumberbatch, the latter of which is still in the running for that role as Marvel continues to find someone to take the lead role in their Phase Three film.

The likelier role for Hardy would be Suicide Squad, if only because he's worked with producer Charles Roven before on The Dark Knight trilogy, and he's very involved in what's happening with all the DC Comics universe films. But at the same time, maybe this major villain role in Fox's X-Men franchise could entice him too. Anyway, there's a lot of comic book roles floating around right now, so we'll just have to wait and see who ends up sticking with what project. Whichever franchise gets Hardy will certainly be made better by his presence, so stay tuned for updates.

Tom Hardy is a great actor who could totally nail one of these roles, but I wonder why there's such a short list for these iconic roles.... Is Hollywood running out of talent?

TheOct8pus on Oct 20, 2014

2

Nope, they just want to go with a sure bet. Bane was liked - and is said to be the best Nolan villain , since Joker was well loved and praised - it was Bane he people talked about heavily - even after the series ended - the iconic Bane VS Batman fight is said to be one of the best Super Hero fights scenes to date. So choosing Hardy not only brings his fan base but the luck that he will portray a villain in the Marvel universe with the same sheer brute and evilness he did with Bane - have you seen him in the movie "Bronson" you should watch that and then you'll know why Tom Hardy is the perfect villain for anything.

That's exactly the crux of my question, though. Marvel is playing it safe by hiring someone with a fan base and a track record of nailing the villain role. I'm wondering if Hollywood isn't oversaturating the market with "sure bets" and familiarity, rather than talent we, the viewers are not overly familiar with. By making Bane Apocalypse, aren't they cheapening both roles? Again, why is there such a short list?

I think you're shortsighted on Hardy as an actor. he wouldn't just be playing "bane" as Apocalypse. the guy has a pretty good range and I see no reason to think he would just be playing the same character.

ColtNoir on Oct 20, 2014

I completely understand that one actor can play many people, but I'm wondering why Hollywood always keeps dipping into the same shallow pool when there are literally millions of actors out there who may (or may not) do an amazing job. I think Tom Hardy is great, but he's not a big surprise in terms of casting. He's a very "comfortable" choice.

Because Hollywood is lazy , is the answer you're looking for ... Plus skittish and risk-averse ; rather than a new guy , they'll always stick to the well-known actor , who brings a resume others love him/her for

And what he said ... so both !

shane willett on Oct 20, 2014

Tom Hardy is only done 1 super villain and 2 villainous characters Bane & Bronson & Evil Pacard from Star Trek Nemesis - so to say he's a sure bet, ehhhh .. he's only done 3 Antagonist roles.. so he's reliable and has a good record.. but to say its lazy,, no they just want someone who is fresh in there eyes, and Dark Knight Returns is a what they want, but in Xmen form

Get Sean Connery to do the voice again!

Sean connery?? he never did the voice for apocolypse

The gag being that Hardy's Bane sounds like Connery in DKR.

man that would be awesome - after seeing him in the movie Bronson - theres nothing this guy can't do. He'll just need 5 inch platforms

Bronson was on point!

I said it once, I'll say it a whole lot more. Tom Hardy is one of the best actors out there right now. From Bronson, to Lawless, Warrior, and even Bane, I believe he can pull off just about any role given to him. I would love to see him as Apocalypse.

Hell add in Locke. Locke is a strong performance from Hardy. One of my favorites.

it doesn't matter because it will never be better than X men days of future past!

DoFP was a kickass, especially compared to a disappointing Spiderman 2, but the continuity was screwy enough before the time travel! I want Fox Studios to show Marvel Studios that they can give Phase 2 and 3 a run, for the benefit for us fanboys.

mooreworthy on Oct 21, 2014

yes and they should give Bryan singer a life long contract to make X men until he dies! It was awesome and with Captain America 2 the most enjoyable movie of this year! note:didn't see Guardians of the galaxy yet!

I'd be very surprised, and disappointed, if an actor of the caliber of Hardy would allow himself to be absorbed into the trite and shallow world of comic book movies. With real talent, like those involved in Birdman who lambast the idiocy of comic book movies in their film, this is just fantasy dreaming on the part of those making these kiddy movies. It's cheap PR stuff and probably doubtful if Hardy has even taken their calls. Yet these blockbuster comic movies have already cheapened the talents of a Jennifer Lawrence by making her a mass audience star and making her richer than a foot up a bull's ass. She's become a herd mentality idiot, but perhaps that's what she was from the start; her work in The Burning Plain and Winter's Bone indicate otherwise, but she's gone a long way in the opposite direction of films like that. I'd hate to see Hardy end up like that because he's something special, but it's his choice. The big fame thing and the big bucks are hard to turn down when dangled in front of you. Again, I doubt he's even taken their calls. We'll see. Meanwhile, rather that the next X dog crap thing go see Hardy in The Drop and watch real acting in a real movie about real people. It's great work by both him and Noomie Rapace. Of course, that's just my opinion and yours might lend itself towards comic book stuff. So be it as that's what makes the world spin around and around, ain't it? So please, don't get too upset with me...my opinions are meaningless in the larger scope of things, righto?

Troll harder.

blargh on Oct 20, 2014

25

Ah Bo, I missed you. Sure most comic movies can be mindless fun but fun they are! Drop was great, but did we have a heard of fans lining up an hour early for the midnight release? Did people feel a kindred spirit, a connection throughout? I like all types of genres and the ones I don't (torture porn for example) are just meant for the other guy, and that's cool with me; they aren't idiots or uncultured, just have different likes and tastes. I like your opinions cause they are yours and it adds to the conversation.

mooreworthy on Oct 20, 2014

26

Well, hey, I agree with you. To each his own. However, if someone likes to eat dogshit ya gotta realize they like dogshit! No? Just teasing. No, the herd does not line up at midnight to see serious filmmaking and acting about real life; they usually line up with bowls in hand to be fed the proverbial dogshit. And just because the masses line up and feel kindred and connected does not mean what they are connected to is worthy of considering it to be otherwise than what it is. I won't argue if one is an idiot or uncultured, although I am tempted to embrace the uncultured part. So 'mindless' fun, eh? Just the labeling it as 'mindless' is my point. It's never interested me, and in fact, I find it a bit horrifying. I am with you on the torture porn stuff and find it really disturbing that it not only gets made, but your said herd folks go to see it in rather large numbers. Doesn't bode well for the consciousness level of the human animal, now does it? And quite frankly I feel close to the same about comic book movies! But hey, that's just me. Thanks for your reply and your polite way of expressing yourself and accepting my rather eccentric tastes and opinions...lol...I do appreciate that mooreworthy.

I don't think you'll care if I spoil this one movie for you, but Tom Hardy plays Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, a Batman movie which means it's a comic book movie. Don't be too surprised, and maybe now be disappointed.

ThrashyTrends on Oct 22, 2014

29

Uh, duh! Tell me something I don't know why don't you? Which is probably why the shallow idiots behind these Marvel comic book movies think they can get him to do theirs. Even though I found the Batman movies unwatchable, I mean really, a guy running around dressed in a bat costume?...Nolan's films are hardly the silly comic book movies like X-Men, the Avengers, et al. Or maybe not. They're all unwatchable to me. And by the way, I embellish when I state I'm disappointed...it's called irony! But thanks anyway for taking the time to compose your reply. Maybe Hardy will turn into another Jennifer Lawrence...who knows? You know, start taking naked photos of himself and putting them on the internet and whining when people look at them. Whadda ya think? Nahhhhhh......

Bo on Oct 23, 2014

30

Yea, a guy in a Bat costume running around would be kinda crazy. Kinda like our real world with real life "superheroes", who run around in homemade costumes and, in some cases, fight criminals. Crazy, but at least they aren't bat suits.

ThrashyTrends on Oct 23, 2014

Ah shittt...That would be pretty cool to see Hardy as Apocalypse. Dem Blue Lips.
