Warner Bros. Gives Batman from 'The LEGO Movie' His Own Spin-Off
There's already a sequel to The LEGO Movie arriving in 2017, and the LEGO-inspired movie Ninjago coming in 2016, but Warner Bros. is going to milk the success of that first building block adventure comedy for all they can. One of the most popular characters from the film was LEGO Batman, voiced perfectly by Will Arnett, and now THR reports the Dark Knight mini-figure will now be getting his own big screen spin-off, and they're working quickly to fasttrack the film. Little details are known about the film, but Arnett will reprise his role as Batman and Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Roy Lee will all return to produce too.
I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this. While Arnett's take on Batman was hilarious, can that kind of character sustain an entire feature film? Presumably this would be a comedy adventure in the same vein as The LEGO Movie, and the last time someone tried to be cute and funny with Batman, we got the abysmal Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Maybe it'll be different in the animated world, but it's going to take some cleverness to make this work. The script will come from Seth Grahame-Smith (Pride & Prejudice & Zombies) with Chris McKay, who is stepping up to direct The LEGO Movie sequel, at the helm.
The question is when will this movie arrive? If the studio is looking to fasttrack the film, is there a chance it could end up arriving before The LEGO Movie sequel? Warner Bros. Pictures did stake out a couple more dates for animated films in 2018 and 2019, so they could easily push back the sequel in favor of the LEGO Batman spin-off. There's already plenty of love for LEGO Batman outside of The LEGO Movie since there's already been three video games featuring the character (not the Will Arnett version) and a straight-to-DVD animated film, but this will likely be much different. Stay tuned for more.
