American Heist

"Banks are an essential threat to our democracy, so consider this justice." After winning an Academy Award for The Pianist, it's unfortunate that the career of Adrien Brody has mostly derailed. I couldn't even tell you the last time I saw a great movie with Brody in it, and that doesn't look to change with this international trailer for the TIFF selected American Heist. All the cliches of a crime thriller are on display, and while Hayden Christensen doesn't seem all that bad for once, this just looks like it's trying to be Heat meets Fast Five (they even got Jordana Brewster on board), but not nearly as good as either.

Here's the international trailer for Sarik Andreasyan's American Heist from Voltage Pictures:

American Heist is directed by Armenian filmmaker Sarik Andreasyan and written by Raul Inglis (Transparency, Suddenly). Frankie (Hayden Christensen) and James (Adrien Brody) are two brothers with checkered pasts; one struggling on the road to normalcy, the other just released from prison. When one drags the other into an ill-fated bank robbery by a gang of dangerous criminals led by the nefarious Sugar (Akon), the loyalty of their sibling bond is tested and the brothers prove how far they will go for greed and family. Saban Films is slated to release the film in the United States, but there's no release date set yet.

Not a fan of "The Grand Budapest Hotel"?

Or Midnight in Paris? Or The Brothers Bloom? Or Fantastic Mr. Fox? Or Hollywoodland? Or Darjeeling Limited? Or King Kong? Yeah, his best movie/performance will always be The Pianist, but by no means has the guy's career "derailed."

When you're doing straight to DVD worthy action flicks with Hayden Christensen its not a stretch to use the word "derailed" but I've enjoyed him immensely in all those movies you named.

Make no mistake: Hayden Christensen is freakin' horrible. Like, beyond bad. I just think we tend to be hard on these actors who peak early in their careers. Adrien Brody has had some severe misses, but just as many hits -- and I give him credit for doing a wide variety of projects.

I've always wondered if he was good in anything, but I only saw Star Wars and Jumper. Does he have some indie flick where he did a good job? What about pre-Star Wars?
          • Sparky
Shattered Glass is pretty damn good. And he's pretty damn good IN it.

Nice, I may check it out. I also thought he wasn't always awful in SW, but the dialogue either made okay acting bad, or in some cases ("Here, everything is smooth...") no actor could make something out of it.

Yea I wouldn't label him a bad actor after just seeing him in SW. the script was awful.
      • Star Wars wasn't really his fault. Blame lucas for being a shitty writer and crappy director. Personally, i highly enjoyed Jumper. Shattered Glass was good. I think he just needs to get a lil older and get the right parts. I mean, have you seen Clooney early years performances? Far away that from roles like Syriana.

American? Heist... anyone want to explain to me why this is an "american" heist and not say... some other not at all related to the movie country's heist?

Did you not see Predators, The Experiment, Midnight in Paris?

Pretty generic and messy trailer. Guys rob bank and it turns out bad. What would be the reason to watch this?
  • Do people still rob banks as much anymore since it's not that hard to rob them digitally or do fishing scams? Akon always seemed like one of those guys that people let sign on records because they felt sorry for him. Hope he doesn't end up being a 'convict', it's be like life imitating art or something.
Looks pretty good to me. I like Brody as an actor. Christensen is looking like he is turning in a decent performance.
