Top 25 Films of 2014

Now that we're in the last month of the year, retrospective looks back at the films of 2014 are starting to slowly emerge. We just featured The 2014 Movie Trailer Mash-Up, and Edgar Wright has chimed in with his Top 10 Films of 2014. Now Little White Lies' editor David Ehrlich has chimed in with his Top 25 Films of 2014, but he's gone out of his way to make it even more special by creating a pretty fantastic video going through the films that impressed him the most. There's a lot of love for indies like Under the Skin and The Double, but some higher profile films make the cut too. But what's at #1? You'll have to watch and see!

Here's Little White Lies' Top 25 Films of 2014 put together by David Ehrlich (via The Playlist):

If you're not patient enough to watch the video (you still should, because it's great), here's the list:

25. Lucy
24. We Are The Best!
23. Timbuktu
22. Selma
21. Love Is Strange
20. Listen Up Philip
19. Godzilla
18. Starred Up
17. Why Don’t You Play in Hell?
16. Mommy
15. The Babadook
14. Palo Alto
13. Ida
12. Goodbye To Language
11. Boyhood
10. The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya
9. Force Majeure
8. God Help The Girl
7. The Double
6. Only Lovers Left Alive
5. Gone Girl
4. Nymphomaniac
3. Under The Skin
2. Inherent Vice
1. The Grand Budapest Hotel

Again, keep in mind that this isn't meant to be a definitive list of the best films of the year. That's just impossible. Anytime a list like this is put out there, recognize that these selections are personal, and different movies impact us all in different ways, make us feel things that others might not necessarily understand. That's what's great about cinema. Some of these films might not be your cup of tea, but that doesn't make the list invalid. There plenty of great films that deserve to be singled out, and we're all going to fall in love with different movies, so just keep that in mind as we keep looking back at the films of 2014.

Great video, even though I don't agree with everything on the list (but it's just one man's opinion). I'm surprised he didn't have the Lego movie on there since he used the song at the end there...once again, my "must-see" list just got longer....
  • Jon Odishaw
A very strange list, and even stranger still to see Godzilla in with these other movies. Though as many of you who frequent this site know I have a hard on for that movie haha.

Like a friendly, loving hard-on, or a spiteful, vengeful hard-on?
      • Jon Odishaw
Friendly and loving toward the movie, spiteful towards those who hated it.

I loved Under The Skin, but it was a 2013 film.
    • Snev De la Fontaine
Only by film-festival standards. All regular cinema-releases occured in 2014.

Wow, it really amazes me others people taste in films (no disrespect meant) but I absolutely hated Under The Skin.
  • NathanDewey
Wow, I've made a top ten (not finished until I see Exodus), and none of the ones on mine are in this top 25. I haven't seen 23 of these, and I thought I saw a lot this year hehe. Of the two I saw, I thought Godzilla was by far the biggest disappointment of the year for me.

I'm surprised I'm not seeing Locke on any of the lists this year... it was one of my favorites.
    • Ricardo_PT
I was a little let down by Locke, I feel like I just didn't get it. I understand the concept and plot, but it didn't pull me in. Hardy is amazing though
  • Ricardo_PT
I love this time of the year! This mash-ups reignite my love for cinema. And I still have so much left to see. Thanks for sharing 😉
I need FORCE MAJEURE like right now!!!~ It hurts my heart that NYMPHOMANIAC made it on the list.
