Strangerland

Early next year, we'll see Nicole Kidman get a little evil by kidnapping the talking bear Paddington, and on the complete other end of the spectrum, there's Strangerland, a haunting thriller about a woman whose teenage kids go missing on the eve of a massive dust storm in the small Australian desert town of Nathgari. As red dust and darkness covers the town, the locals, including police officer David Rae (Hugo Weaving) try to help, but it soon becomes apparent that something terrible may have happened to them, and that's when fingers are pointed, and the situation escalates pretty quickly. This looks like a pretty intense thriller, and it's nice to see someone like Joseph Fiennes doing something promising again. Watch the trailer!

Here's the Aussie trailer for Kim Farrant's Strangerland (via The Film Stage):

Strangerland marks the directorial debut of Kim Farrant from a script written by Fiona Seres and Michael Kinirons. Catherine (Nicole Kidman) and Matt Parker (Joseph Fiennes) have their lives shaken up when their two teenage children, Lily and Tom disappear into the desert. The locals join the search led by local cop, David Rae (Hugo Weaving) as it soon becomes apparent that something terrible may have happened to the kids. Suspicion is cast, rumors spread and ancient Aboriginal stories are told in whispers as the locals begin to turn against the couple. The film does not yet have a distribution date in the US. I really want to see Weaving's performance in this film! It has been too long since I have seen him play a role like this.
