Will Smith (Probably) Not Getting on Board with 'Independence Day 2'
As it has been for the past few years, it appears Will Smith is still up in the air as to whether or not he wants to star in Independence Day 2. A new "update" from Deadline reports that Smith has already informed 20th Century Fox that he won't be signing on for the sequel to the 1996 sci-fi blockbuster which is currently slated to land in theaters exactly 20 years later in July of 2016. However, there's some conflicting, ass-covering backtracking because the article also says, "I was told not to set this in stone, because Smith has been back and forth before on whether to make the movie, though I hear he is pretty much decided."
Anyway, whether or not Smith does the sequel, the project won't need to be delayed. We already heard last fall that Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich prepared two scripts with James Vanderbilt for just this occasion. One script included Will Smith in their plans for the sequel, while the other distinctly different script left him out. The sequel was said to focus on Smith's character's step-son, but we're not sure if that's the case in both versions of the script. Smith is expected to have the final conversation with Emmerich about his involvement very soon, but it ain't over until the fat lady sings, so we'll keep you posted. Worried?
