Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Jared Leto All Confirmed for 'Suicide Squad'

December 2, 2014

Suicide Squad

After weeks of casting information surfacing little by little, Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment have officially announced the cast of Suicide Squad, and it's one hell of a line-up. Will Smith will be playing Deadshot, Tom Hardy is Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie is Harley Quinn, Jared Leto is The Joker, Jai Courtney (Terminator: Genisys) plays Boomerang and Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina) is Enchantress. All of these characters form a super villain team recruited by the government for secret missions. Production begins in April and lasts through September with an August 5th, 2016 release set.

Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. says:

"The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote ‘Training Day’ and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero."

Honestly, with a big cast like this, I find myself much more interested in Suicide Squad than Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice or even Justice League. This is an amazing assembly of talent, and the fact that they're not playing typical superheroes just sweetens the deal. Add David Ayer into the mix as director and The Dark Knight trilogy producer Charles Roven, and I'm starting to have a little more confidence in what Warner Bros. is trying to do, at least with this particular property. Still no word on whether or not Jesse Eisenberg will show up as Lex Luthor, but we've got plenty of time to figure that out. Sound good?

Plus, Variety says Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and OPRAH are the top three names on WB's list for Amanda Waller
    • Akirakorn
I'd prefer a less established name, considering all the big ones they already have. If not, may I suggest Dana Owens?
    • matthew south
I actually like the idea of Oprah as Waller....
  • That is some epic casting. Im not sure about Jai. I really dont know why this guys is on anyones radar. His work does nothing for me. Now Tom Hardy on the other hand.....
    • JBrotsis
See, I like Jai and am thrilled he's getting all this work and attention, but that's because I've been a big fan of the "Spartacus" series on STARZ which, I felt, he did a solid performance in and was a very likable character.
      • Rock n Rollllll
I'm with you on this. I think Jai is a good actor. He was great in Spartacus, too bad he had to die prematurely.
  • Miguel Garay Boszeta
For me, is to much for just the Suicide Squad. Hope is good and with a little humor, please !
  • 800millionman
That is one hell of a cast. Leto as Joker? SOLD. Robbie as Harley Quinn. Holy shit. Loving this already.
  • JBrotsis
Well...that's too bad that Margot is playing Quinn....I had high hopes she would play Captain Marvel. Nonetheless, she'll be a great Harley...but I'm still saddened. And, on Hardy playing two DC villains in just a couple years apart.
Her scenes in THE WOLF OF WALL STREET cemented her as Quinn. That accent, that body... Let Katie Sackoff be Captain Marvel.
    • Rock n Rollllll
Eh.....I'm not really too big a fan of Captain Marvel. I think they made a GREAT choice with her as Quinn.
Yeah this is huge. Will Smith alone legitimizes the film. Although he has not had a hit in a few years, Smith is still a very capable actor. Leto as The Joker will be an interesting pick. He was not an original member so how he is worked into the film will be a curiosity of mine. Also, if they some how keep Eisenberg as Luthor, this will be practically all villains.... BAD ASS!!!~
    • Rock n Rollllll
I just hope Will doesnt display that cheesy charm in this movie. Id like him to have the same demeanor he had in Badboys 2.
      • mooreworthy
Smith will do his homework and understand the impact and role of Deadshot. I hope.
        • Rock n Rollllll
I really hope so man. I always seem to feel that the acting he brings to the script feels misplaced.
  • HarryFiddleSticks
I just hope that Will Smith will play Deadshot and not "Will Smith playing Will Smith" as he has done in most of his movies
    • steve
What movies are you referring too
      • HarryFiddleSticks
Men in Black, Wild Wild West, Independence Day, Enemy of the State, Bad Boys 1 & 2. Basically all action movies he's been in.
        • Akirakorn
Not too sure on Made in America, but Where the Day Takes You wasn't Will Smith playing Will Smith. Then again he wasn't "Big Will" back then.
  • John Doe
Yeah... I'm gettin real sick and tired of all these damn superhero superteams movies. I mean after the Avengers (which wasn't all that good to begin with) I'm already completely worn out by them.
    • Rock n Rollllll
DC doesnt do things like Marvel. Different genre, different writing, different direction.
      • OfficialJab
We don't really know what DC does yet, since they do lots of things. If this is going the Nolan/Snyder way then it has a good shot. They can't get Nolan to produce on every film though - we might start seeing what their universe will look like for the first time when this comes out.
        • Rock n Rollllll
I'm talking about their comics, hence the reason why DC movies are totally different. It's like comparing Classic Rock Music to Thrash Metal Rock. They each have their own style.
          • OfficialJab
The comic books won't always (ever?) be a reliable indication of what the film will be, let alone a sprawling series of them. All depends on the people involved.
          • Rock n Rollllll
Of course. No movie ever truly reflects or pays thorough justice to its original source, but im trying to make a point, and thats that DC movies will not be like Marvel as they are both visioned towards different styles. John Doe was trying to compare SS to Avengers and my defense was just that SS will in no way be like Avengers.

'CALM--ICKS' Franchise slum 'CALM---ICKs' ---------------------MORE, STILL MORE -------------------------------------franchise slum 'CALM---ICKS'.
  • Dubmaster2010
DC still don't get it...they don't know how to build a franchise. Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg??? WTF!?!?!? Why they use the same Actor for a different Role...he has to play Bane.
    • Rock n Rollllll
      Shut up dumbmaster.
    • TyeFighterPilot
So Human Torch/Captain America weren't played by Chris Evans?
      • Akirakorn
Different studio / franchise / "universe" To help your (or his) point would be Evans playing someone in the new Fantastic Four universe/franchise... whatever. Although to be fair, it wouldn't be right to have Hardy play Bane with a different batman. If this is anywhere tied into either Nolan's "universe" or the new DC one. Keep in mind "The Losers" is a Vertigo (DC) comic and featured Idris Elba, Evans, Zoe Saldana who are all in Marvel films.
      • Dubmaster2010
Fanatastic Four is no Movie from the Cinematic Universe. Its part of FOX. So that is ok. I see no connection.
  • Tyrell Antonio
I didn't even hear rumors about Smith, pretty surprising.
  • Rock n Rollllll
Wow I'm impressed that Tom Hardy decided to do this - thats awesome! Will Smith, not so much. But I'm excited for this.
  • TyeFighterPilot
Will Smith? I never thought he would do a movie like this. I liked the Assault on Arkham animation flick. This has potential to be a good movie.
  • arkosidonus
The Joker was never a part of SS and including him makes zero sense. 1. Why would he join? It is completely out of character. 2. Why would they want him? His "power" is basically being nuts. They even, terribly, at one point claimed he had "super insanity". Unless he is there as a support character for Harley, he has no business even being casted.
    • Rock n Rollllll
He's not joining. He's just apart of the movie, most notably because Quinn is part of SS.
    • desispeed
thats pretty much what I expect he'll be....did you watch the recent Batman Arhkam Asylum animated movie? Featured SS and Joker
    • Brian Sleider
Not like he and Harly could be up to no good at the start, Harly gets caught and thats it for the joker in the movie. Seems stupid to whine about possible plot details this early. If you want to whine about the casting choices thats fine.
  • shane willett
Leto as the Joker - hmmmm could go well - or could be to 30 second to Mars
  • CoosCoos
This sounds like a bad joke. I had to check the date to make sure it isn't April 1. What a train wreck.
  • Maxx
What a cast. Overall, a bit confusing. I would never have grouped any of these actors together in my head. But I am trying to trust in DC. Man of Steel was like an infant learning how to walk and taking its first step. Let's hope that this baby can avoid running into the coffee table.
  • Brian Sleider
I think they should try to get asses in seats with compelling stories not big names. I see Smith as a liability in a movie like this.
  • MattPeloquin
I know the two universes don't exist together, but I love how in TDK Batman tells Joker he's going to lock him in a padded cell for the rest of his life and hopefully in SS we'll catch up with Joker still in that exact same cell that the Bats promised him.
  • mooreworthy
Strange casting choice, and adding the Joker (he was in the animated Suicide movie), but I am for an anti-hero film! Goyer knows his comics, and I am totally jazzed for this project. Most have given up on Smith, and everyone has their right to voice their love/ hate for him. I'm also more excited for this compared to B v S because you can throw continuity out the window, everything is fair game.
  • Lina
Tom Hardy will be a fantastic Rick Flagg!
  • Jon Odishaw
Im confused by the hatred for Will Smith. Sure he hasnt really produced a hit in a while but am I the only one who bawled my eyes out to pursuit of happiness and I am legend. Last time I checked he's one of the most talented actors on the planet.
    • Rock n Rollllll
You really bawled on I am legend? Wow! I thought that movie was horrible.......BUT thats my opinion of course. I honestly dont think he ever made a smooth transition since Fresh Prince. Every movie hes made since then i have not been a huge fan of. I always feel like his humor, seriousness, and drama is always misplaced in his movies. I feel his acting just isnt that great. And even now he's still struggling to make something that gets good reviews. Who knows, maybe this movie will be "the one" to finally show what kind of actor he really is.
