'About a Boy' & 'Cinderella' Writer Boards First 'Star Wars' Spin-Off
After rumors swirled that Simon Kinberg was going to step up for the next round of writing for the first standalone Star Wars spin-off that will be directed by Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards, another writer has the job instead. Gary Whitta finished his job on the first draft of the script for the film rumored to be about the heist to obtain the plans to the first Death Star, and now THR reports About a Boy and Disney's new Cinderella screenwriter Chris Weitz will next step up to take a crack at the script. That seems like an odd hire for Star Wars, but Weitz did get an Oscar nomination for About a Boy, so it's not exactly bad news.
As for genre fare, he directed the fantasy The Golden Compass (for which he also wrote the script), and he also was at the helm of The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Did you feel that? It's as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and they probably won't be silenced. Honestly, I'm not too worried about the hiring of Weitz, because he's a solid writer. Maybe he has a love for Star Wars like the rest of us and has an approach to polish the script that the studio likes. Anyway, here's hoping we actually get some more solid details on this spin-off soon since J.J. Abrams isn't in a position to keep this one in a mystery box, especially since casting is already underway as well. Thoughts?
