Top Gun - Iceman

Iceman is back! It's pretty much official, even though they haven't signed all the contracts yet. Actor Val Kilmer, now 55 years old, has announced via his own Facebook page that he is returning for the sequel Top Gun 2 which has been in the works for a few years. After the tragic death of director Tony Scott, the project was put on hold temporarily until they could figure out another plan. Now it seems to be revving up again and the project is moving forward, with Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer still attached. Kilmer, who played pilot Lt. Tom "Iceman" Kazanski in the original, will be back and he hasn't even read the script (yet).

Here's the full quote and Top Gun 2 reveal posted by Val Kilmer on his Facebook (found via ComingSoon):

I just got offered ‪#‎topgun2‬ - not often you get to say "yes" without reading the script…
"It's starring Gene Hackman…"
"Yes" "The director is Francis Coppola…" "Yes!"

Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Cruise!!! "Yes." We will all miss Tony Scott one of the kindest gentlemen I've ever met in the film biz, but let's fire up some fighter jets again!!!

A few hours after posting, Kilmer updated his Facebook post and added this bit (likely after he got a call):

This is a long way off so calm down. This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role. I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the topgun… An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent…

Kilmer certainly sounds excited to jump back into the cockpit of a fighter jet. Top Gun 2 hasn't announced a new director yet, but we'll probably hear more soon. Our friends at ComingSoon point out this great quote from Jerry Bruckheimer explaining in a previous, older interview what this new one will be about: "The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones? [Tom Cruise as Maverick] is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay." Not sure if I'm totally sold on that concept yet, but I am totally sold on Iceman and Maverick coming back again for more fighter jet awesomeness. Excited for more?

Hahahaaaa!!! Whaaat?? I'm sorry, but nobody over 50 years old has any business inside the cockpit of a fighter jet....maybe Maverick and IceMan will be flight instructors or something.... Anyway....some sequels were not meant to be....let's hope this one doesn't take off (no pun intended)

    Ice Cream Man, more like.

In all seriousness I'd love to see Kilmer make a proper comeback. Jim Morrison, Doc Holliday, the guy from Heat, I've got a lot of enjoyment from his performances. Hopefully this will be the first step for him. Might need to lose a few pounds first though. Not sure they'll be asking him to recreate the volleyball scene at the moment...

      Don't forget Madmartigan!

Yep, he was great in Willow. I also liked him in Spartan, Wonderland, Kill Me Again and Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang.

If not, maybe he can star in that Memento remake

Only "Michael Bay" could make Top Gun 2 great after "Tony Scott".

You know after the death of Tony Scott I was really hoping this woulda been put on hold indefinitely, but no. Fighter pilots are just not nearly as relevent or cool as they once were back in the Reagan era.
    • Tester
I am from that era and I can tell you that it really had nothing to do with pilots. The movie was a typical 80s movie with hot young actors and cool music ( I for one did not really care much for the music in that movie nor the movie itself ).

I'll say this: I would love to see skinny Kilmer make a huge comeback.

Dude...even if they eff it up, it would be nice to see Kilmer reprise the role or at least get some screen time in.
