Aubrey Plaza Joining Zac Efron & Robert De Niro for 'Dirty Grandpa'
If you're lamenting the final season of "Parks & Recreation" beginning this week, don't worry, because Aubrey Plaza has lined up a new role for the big screen. Deadline has word that the actress who plays the dreary, April Ludgate on the aforementioned NBC comedy series is taking a role in Lionsgate's road trip comedy Dirty Grandpa. For those who don't remember, the film follows Robert De Niro as a perverted former Army general who thinks his grandson is about to marry the wrong woman, so he tricks him into driving down to Florida for spring break in order to get him to cut loose amongst the flood of sexuality.
Last we heard, the film may also be called Driving Dick Kelly, but it sounds like Dirty Grandpa may have stuck. In addition, there seems to be some discrepancies with the plot description as the latest report that adds Plaza to the cast describes the film as following an uptight twenty-something (Efron) who embarks on a road trip before his wedding to bond with his recently widowed grandfather (De Niro) only to find that his grandpa is a foul-mouthed lunatic on a mission to get laid during Spring Break. Maybe the grandfather is using the wedding as an excuse to just get down to Florida?
Anyway, Plaza will be playing Lenore, a savvy, beguiling party girl looking for fun on Spring Break. That's a decent cast so far, and Efron showed just how funny he can be with last year's Neighbors. We just hope that this is one of those comedies that is actually good, since De Niro has unfortunately, successfully avoided those in the latter part of his career. Dan Mazer ("Da Ali G Show") is directing with a script from John Phillips. Previously the film was set for a Christmas release this year, but now the film has been set for an August 12th, 2016 release late next summer. Stay tuned for more.
