The last we heard anything about a sequel to Broken Lizard's cult classic comedy Super Troopers, the script was finished, and a studio was willing to distribute, but the money still needed to be raised to actually make the film. And here we are, nearly a year later, and it's time for fans to help make it happen. Broken Lizard just started an Indiegogo campaign to raise some money for the sequel, or the film won't get made. Fox Searchlight will distribute the film, but it's up to Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske to get the cash, and they made a video to convince you to help.
Super Troopers star, writer and director Jay Chandrasekhar says (via Variety):
"We finally have the chance to make ‘Super Troopers 2.' But since we refused to write a sequel where the highway cops have morphed into super hero-vampires, Fox Searchlight proposed the following deal: They’ll release the film, but we have to raise all of the money. So we’ve turned to Indiegogo and our fans to prove that it’s finally time for ‘Super Troopers 2′ to get made.”
Broken Lizard needs to make $2 million by April 24th in order to get the film moving. If the goal is met, pre-production will begin in May with shooting beginning this summer somewhere in the Northeast. But if the money isn't raised, then the script just sits on a shelf. There's a whole bunch of perks available for those who contribute to get the sequel made, including a Beerfest Tournament and smoking some weed with the cast in Colorado. Or you can even get one of the police cars from the film itself. So be sure to check out the Indiegogo page for Super Troopers 2 if you're desperate to see it, and we'll see if the shenanigans happen.
UPDATE: In 24 hours, Broken Lizard has reached their goal. You're going to get Super Troopers 2.
