Ryan Gosling / Brad Pitt / Christian Bale

Though director Adam McKAay was able to assemble surprising A-list cameos from the likes of Harrison Ford, Jim Carrey and even Will Smith for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, the cast of his first big screen drama is even more impressive. Variety reports Christian Bale, Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling will all star in The Big Short, an adaptation of a non-fiction book from Moneyball author Michael Lewis about the most recent collapse of the financial industry, focusing on unregulatedĀ bond and real estate derivative markets and the traders behind them. McKay was reported to write and direct the project late last March.

Here's the official synopsis of the book:

"The real story of the crash began in bizarre feeder markets where the sun doesn't shine and the SEC doesn't dare, or bother, to tread: the bond and real estate derivative markets where geeks invent impenetrable securities to profit from the misery of lower--and middle--class Americans who can't pay their debts. The smart people who understood what was or might be happening were paralyzed by hope and fear; in any case, they weren't talking."

McKay has always been vocal about his political beliefs, especially when it comes to speaking out against corrupt Wall Street workers. Even his film The Other Guys has plenty of prodding at the financial system and position of corrupt bureaucrats and their shady dealings. This project is being described as an ensemble drama like Traffic where a lot of A-list stars have pivotal, but not necessarily huge roles, though they all have some sort of tie to each other. Pitt is also producing the film through his Plan B production banner. This is a huge new project for Adam McKay and it could change the trajectory of his career.
