Emma Stone to Face Steve Carell in 'Battle of the Sexes' Tennis Match
After playing father and son in Crazy Stupid Love, last year's Oscar-nominated stars Steve Carell and Emma Stone will face each other on the tennis court. You may remember that over a year ago, we learned Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy, the director and writer behind Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours, were developing a film about the famous Battle of the Sexes tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs in 1973. Now Deadline reports Fox Searchlight is behind the film to be produced by Boyle, but directed by Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris, directors of Ruby Sparks and Little Miss Sunshine.
For those who don't know, this iconic match is one of the most talked about events in sports history. Riggs came out of retirement at age 55 to play King in five matches to see who was truly the best after ragging on female tennis players frequently throughout his career. King came out on top and the rest is history, but it's been proposed that Riggs lost on purpose in order to erase some gambling debts to the mob. The script is ready to go, which puts it ahead of two rival projects, one with Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti as the two tennis players, and the other a more comedic approach with Will Ferrell attached to star. We'll see what happens, but it sounds like this will be the one to watch.
