Fathers & Daughters

"I was so afraid of you leaving me!" The first Japanese trailer (in English) for Gabriele Muccino's Fathers & Daughters has arrived. The film stars Russell Crowe as the father, with Amanda Seyfried as his daughter (all grown up). The cast includes Aaron Paul, Diane Kruger, Jane Fonda, Octavia Spencer and many others. The story spans two settings across 30 years - the first in the 1980s when Crowe struggles to try and raise his young daughter as a single father; and also the modern day where that same daughter, now all grown up, struggles to connect with others just as well. It seems to be a very bold, emotional look at the long-term effects of tragedy. This got my attention, though I already like Crowe's side of the story more.

Here's the first trailer for Gabriele Muccino's Fathers & Daughters, on YouTube (via The Film Stage):

A Pulitzer-winning writer (Crowe) grapples with being a widower and father after a mental breakdown, while, 27 years later, his grown daughter (Seyfried) struggles to forge connections of her own. Fathers and Daughters is directed by Italian filmmaker Gabriele Muccino, of the films Playing for Keeps, Kiss Me Again, Seven Pounds, The Pursuit of Happyness, Remember Me My Love and The Last Kiss previously. The screenplay was written by Brad Desch. The film will be opening in Japan this October (where the trailer is from), but the US release has yet to be figured out. Stay tuned for updates on the release. Your thoughts?

The music, the editing, the VO. So Japanese. This looks so sad, but relatively paint-by-numbers. Good stuff.

There was so much going on there that didn't belong in that trailer....kind of took away the emotional impact. However, this looks DEPRESSING AS HELL.
